Re: Struggling to record in multiple sessions with BizHawk
I'd like to be able to record part of a longplay, save and exit the program, then come back and resume recording the movie where I stopped.

I found the option to start recording on movie end. This isn't great, because then I have to play the whole thing so far before I start back up.

I don't see an option to set the movie stay from playback to recording. If I just click "Record movie" it tries to make a new file from 0.

What am I missing here? What's your workflow?

Re: MP4 to AVI Converter Question
It depends a lot on the device you're using. Some of them cant process such a conversion, The device probably doesn't understand that you want to keep its memory safe)), and they overheat and sometimes even have issues. However, if you have a good one, I can suggest https://convertr.org/avi-converter. Remember to be sure that your device is all right, as sometimes if it has any issues, the conversion might worsen the situation. I wish you good luck and if my option doesn't suit you, search for ideas online.

Re: I am new what should i do?
We only accept recordings from emulators if you are going to do anything retro, unless it's something that emulators currently can't handle properly e.g. some N64/GameCube/PS2 games.

As for the games, always use the Search bar in the Latest Releases page (it shows all longplays from when the project started to present) to see if that game has not been recorded by someone else. We do not accept alternate longplays of already covered games unless it's a version for a different region, a fan translation or a co-op. And no, ROM hacks are not allowed for submission.

Hello!
I want to help submitting longplays.
I also have old original consoles and hardware.
What do I need to know?
Is there a category to upload videos from original hardware?
Also, I would like to know what games you need for me to longplay and if you need longplays from romhacks as well.

Re: Upscaling Longplays for Youtube
Youtube has the worst encoder for videos that are smaller than 720p so here is a good way to upscale longplays for best youtube quality.

First is this will not be replacing the longplay that we have on archive.org. This will be a separate video file from the longplay specifically just for youtube so that the people on youtube can enjoy our longplays better.

For games that are in 240p or around that resolution then it is best to upscale it by 3x to get it up to 720p. Pretty much all consoles that are made for the N64 and earlier will fit into this category. If you use Bizhawk for dumping PS1 and Sega Saturn games so it comes out in 480p then just double the resolution to 960p and it will be fine.

For consoles that run native 480p/480i then it is recommended to upscale them to 1080p as the youtube encoding doesn't look good on those if you upscale it to just 720p for example:
i.imgur.com/DUFVtOR.png

and if you cant see a difference from that then here is a close up:
i.imgur.com/1P43DVX.png

Now if you don't want to wait for megui to upscale a longplay to 720p or 1080p as upping the resolution means upping the time it takes to encode the file then here is a solution that will save on time depending on how good your PC is. Using the latest version of Handbrake has now included the ability to upscale AND the audio encoding has been fixed so it doesn't sound terrible anymore.
Download Handbrake https://handbrake.fr/downloads.php
Once you have it downloaded you need to get the settings proper before you start encoding. Create a new preset and use these settings under the video tab video:
i.imgur.com/cMKipX5.png

As for upscaling you go to the dimensions tab and make sure cropping is set to custom so it doesn't automatically crop the image as this should have already been done in megui when the longplay was originally encoded.
Make Sure Anamorphic is set to none, now checkmark optimal size and allow upscaling. If you are doing a game that is native 480p then resolution limit should be set to 1080p and if it is a game that is native 240p you can set resolution limit to 720p
These settings should look like this:
i.imgur.com/01LRRH8.png

Make sure you save the changes to the preset so you don't have to do this every single time. I recommend saving a preset for both 720p and 1080p, depending on if you do longplays that are native 480p or not

Also DS and 3DS longplays act a bit different since they are more vertical than the average video, and Youtube acts weird if you upscale them to 720p, so I suggest doing 1080p upscale for DS and 1440p or 4K upscale for 3DS

VERY IMPORTANT!!!
Handbrake doesn't encode audio too well, sometimes you can get away with it but other times it can really ruin the audio quality
Under audio tab you have to click selection behavior, then click on the X to remove the audio when it encodes and save it in the preset. Example:
i.imgur.com/BBvaWUO.png

If you do not have the original audio by itself anymore then you can use MKVToolNix and put the longplay in there, uncheck the video codec and it will give you a .mka audio file that you can use to mux together with the finished Handbrake export.
Here is an example of how to uncheck the video then just hit Start multiplexing:
i.imgur.com/QcTN4kq.png

Then you can reencode the audio through megui by dropping the mka file in audio encoding and mux that file with the Handbrake export

Recommended Upscale Resolutions:

720p Landscape --->NES/SNES/Gameboy/Gameboy Color/Gameboy Advance/PSP/Anything else that uses similar or smaller resolutions than these. 1080p upscaling for PSP stuff is optional but recommended.

720p Portrait ---> Nintendo DS (except shmups)

1080p Landscape --->Gamecube/Wii/Dreamcast/PlayStation 2/PlayStation 3/PS Vita/Xbox/Xbox 360/Anything that uses similar resolutions as these. Also that anything in the shmup genre must be upscaled with this setting independently of the platform.

1080p Portrait ------> Nintendo DS (shmups), 3DS

Re: HD encoding for Youtube
Sometimes, after uploading a longplay to YouTube in its original source (ie from ArchiveOrg), some parts of the video get their quality reduced and, in the worst cases, too blurry when there is lot of motion going on or when the game is really running at 50/60fps consistently, this is a big problem especially if it's a racing or shmup game. It's in those cases that we ideally require a second encoded video but done in a resolution higher than 720p.

This process can be done directly on megui assuming that you already know the steps to encode videos for the site. However, you must make a clone of the .avs script where the PointResize factor is:
* 4x the original res if it's a retro platform before the PS1/N64 era, or
* 2x if native res is 480p or higher but lower than 720p.

Only that you must use Medium or Fast profile with a constant rate factor not higher than 23, and preferably use all x264 threads instead of limiting to, for example, 3-6 threads (which is a setting used to avoid overheating).

But, in case you didn't make an HD encode at that moment, there is an alternative with Handbrake. Just load the original .mp4/.mkv video file and, in the Dimensions menu, uncheck Optimal Size and check Allow Upscaling, then multiply both the width and height by two each. For the Presets field, use the Same as Source option for fps, crf must be not higher than 20 and use either Medium or Fast profile (both give the same result anyway, so no need to worry).

The resulting .mp4/.mkv file must be uploaded to our FTP along with the SD encode that goes to Archive; but, in case it's an already-submitted game, just upload the HD encode and it'll be used for when we schedule your longplay.

Regarding the DSP, HLE is still recommended even if you're using a dev build. Also that you must enable frame dumping at current internal resolution and FFV1 codec as well to ensure a reasonable quality.

Re: Correct video cropping
Crop to the point where nothing is lost. If that means large menu but gameplay with borders, so be it. The final resolution does not matter. Never try to encode to a specific resolution. It just needs to be 2x after cropping.

Re: Correct video cropping
Hi everyone!

I'm working on my longplay of Picture Puzzle for MSX.

In the process of video editing, I encountered the problem of correct cropping: different width of black borders. In regular gameplay borders are wider than in main menu and puzzle select screen. I can crop video keeping resolution 256x192 in native resolution (after cropping video will be doubled with nearest neighbor algorithm).

Here are the links to some screenshots:

- main menu: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1_TAG...sp=sharing
- puzzle select screen: https://drive.google.com/file/d/136nI...sp=sharing
- regular gameplay: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1IPZ2...sp=sharing

But I can crop video to 204x188. Here are examples:

- main menu [204x188]: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1AASG...sp=sharing
- puzzle select screen [204x188]: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Rnxa...sp=sharing
- regular gameplay [204x188]: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1-ynJ...sp=sharing

What do you think folks, which variant is correct in this case? It's very important for me to know.

How to do that? I heard that if you got a desync, you should rarely use savestates.

Forgot to tell you Battletoads arcade was done a very long time ago: https://longplays.org/infusions/longplays/longplays.php?cat_id=1&longplay_id=4844

Sorry but you are too late for that one. Sad

Re: Training before recording?
Arcade/Mame does not support proper input recording yet! It will desync in most games, there are some ways to do it and get it done properly but it is too much hassle, it is best to wait until it gets integrated into bizhawk indeed.

Re: Training before recording?
There's FinalBurn Neo which I think supports re-recording as well. However, my recommendation is to wait until a proper Arcade core gets added into BizHawk.
