Player's Review

Predator 2, developed by Arc Developments and published by Mirrorsoft on the ImageWorks label in 1991.

"For the Predator, it is the ultimate sport - the killing of human prey. For the Citizens of los Angeles, it is a nightmare beyond belief. And for the Detective Lieutenant Mike Harrigan, It's another dirty job that's got to be done... It's Kill of be Killed!"

Predator 2 looks like a cross between Dynamite Duke and punchout. The game is a side scrolling shooter where you must gun down every drug dealer in LA in your quest to find the predators lair. Sometimes you will get an enemy run across the bottom which you must punchout else you will lose energy quickly.

The game has only four levels, but the first is really long and feels like a chore. Along the way you can collect ammo and weapon upgrades as well as the ability to replenish your armor. Often, normal citizens will run through the screen. These must be avoided else you will eventually lose your badge and the game. The Predator can also be seen in the background stalking and again should be avoided else it will fire back a spear or disc that can take of lots of energy should it hit you. At the end of each level will be a boss style battle where you take on many enemies at once. Energy will drop fast here but hitting the right enemies or background items do drop valuable armor and ammo to keep you in the fight.

Levels 2 and 3 are short and straight forward. In level 4 the game can go off the rails in difficulty as the aim is to shoot any discs that come flying at you. Don't let them hit as they take off lots of energy! The real problem is when there are 2 or 3 predators on screen throwing them. They go invisible and the hit detection can feel really bad. The screens in the background should be shot to drop grenades ready for the final battle. Once at the final, wait for the three predators to appear at the top and shoot the left most one to drop the grenade launcher. Now its just killing everything in a few shots to win the game. You do get a couple of continues should you fall.

Overall, the game isn't to bad on the C64 although due to its speed, it can be a difficult game especially with all the enemies that can appear on screen at once. You do get a couple of continues should you fall though. The presentation is...ok but could have been better. It follows Back to the Future 3 where the game just ends once finished. Again some how this short game managed to take up two sides of a disc.
