The alien race of Smogulans, led by Czar Zoster, is invading the Earth, namely the town of Tromaville. The only force that can stop the invasion of Radiation Rangers are the Toxic Crusaders.

Toxic Crusaders is a side-scrolling beat 'em up video game based on the American cartoon series Toxic Crusaders (1991), and Troma Entertainment's 1984 film The Toxic Avenger. There are three versions of this game, each entirely different from the other: the NES, Genesis and Gameboy versions. The Genesis version was developed by Infogrames and published by Sega.

Just like the NES version, this game tries to mix in itself games like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Arcade Game and The Adventures of Bayou Billy but completely forgets to be variative and fun. Multiple mechanics and modes of play are nice to have, but they can spice things up only if they are thoughtfully written in the gameplay. Here, they feel like they were just thrown in, and waves upon waves of few types of enemies monotonously storm the screen in equal intervals on level space. And the difficulty is very high, but there are few ways to overcome it. Pretty much everything moves way too fast, with little to no animation. There are too many ways to get insta-killed, and they are encountered way too often, especially on the train stage.

Worst of all, the game is broken. Sometimes enemies become invincible. Sometimes your attacks pass right through them. Sometimes enemy projectiles have no effect when they hit you. Sometimes enemy projectiles make your character play hurt sound, but with no animation, and dealing no damage.

Maybe this game could be better as an arcade title. Then developers could afford space for better animation in addition to all those mechanics, and the difficulty would make the game into another infamous coin-eater.

Played on Hard difficulty with all characters.
