Suggestions to longplayers seeking for their next hunt (Mostly jRPGs)

Last updated on 3 years ago
G
I prepared a small list that may inspire longplayers for their next hunt. I noticed there are many SNES title that should have been recorded a long time ago.

Final Fantasy Tactics A2 (Nintendo DS)
The isometric artworks of this Nintendo DS game are so gorgeous. It definitely makes this game a must-play for fans of tactical JRPGs. I was surprised when I noticed the game was missing so much it's a classic.
live.staticflickr.com/65535/50550001338_0e1e5cf8bf_m.jpg

Albert Odyssey 2 (SNES)
There's not a single longplay of this game over all YouTube, thus it's a great opportunity to record something that's rare. I definitely love the soundtrack.
live.staticflickr.com/65535/50550712311_a40ba48fac_m.jpg

Albert Odyssey: Legend of Eldean (Sega Saturn)
There are a few longplays (mostly Let's Plays), but none of them have been recorded with quality.
live.staticflickr.com/65535/50550706701_2ec30f8bc4_m.jpg

Eldorado Gate (Sega Dreamcast)
This game looks stunning! Sadly, there's hardly no trace of this game and I'm not even sure a ROM with English patch can be found. There's a strong Breath of Fire 3 and Breath of Fire 4 vibe to this game.
live.staticflickr.com/65535/50550845662_5ce3a93d4b_m.jpg

Twisted Tales of Spike McFang (SNES)
It's a beautiful top-down action game. The graphics are on par with many adventure RPG games like Illusion or Gaia and Terranigma. The sprite artworks and animation were especially slick.
live.staticflickr.com/65535/50550830812_f37ce7afe3_m.jpg

Jerry Boy 2 (aka Jelly Boy) (SNES)
It was a beautiful japanese platformer game. I believe there was an English patch. The graphics were much better than the first game. I think I had the potential to be a remembered classic if it was released in America or Europe.
live.staticflickr.com/65535/50549997498_1aa2517126_m.jpg

Shadow Hearts Series (Playstation 2)
I was very suspicious when I purchased this game, I was convinced it was going to suck. The seller at Game Stop offered the first game for free if I purchased Shadow Hearts 2 so it convinced me. I didn't regret it because it easily became among my top 5 JRPG of all time. The storyline is similar to tv show Supernatural. There are three games. The last game was sort of disappointing due to its comedy shift but it worth playing it anyway. Seriously, no one calling themselves a JRPG lover should miss this game, easily on par with games such as FF7 and FF10.

Koudelka (Playstation 1)
It's the prequel of the Shadow Hearts series. It has a Resident Evil vibe. Most people praised the Lovecraftian and madman storyline.
G
Other titles that came to mind.

Suikoden Tierkreis (Nintendo DS)
Wow, this game was stunning. More people deserve to hear about it. The production quality is top notch. The soundtrack is my favorite in the entire series. The storyline used some kind of Mandela Effect plot device (before the term was even coined).
live.staticflickr.com/65535/50550699176_41d29698e2_m.jpg

Final Fantasy 13-2 and Lightning Returns (Playstation 3)
I missed these two installments and I won't have a chance to play them since I no longer own a Playstation 3. I would definitely like to watch them someday.

Digital Devil Saga 1 & 2 (Playstation 2)
I didn't have the opportunity to play these games except for the introduction of the first one. The premise sounded quite mysterious but I was turned off by the excessive random encounters. All I can say is that the soundtrack is epic with awesome electric guitar riffs. A low-budget JRPG that seemed like an hidden jewel.

Star Ocean (Super Nintendo)
Another game I would like to watch. The graphics seemed very advanced for a SNES game. I requested this one directly to xRavenXP and he said he should do it; that would be really awesome.

Children of Mana (Nintendo DS)
This game looked so beautiful. It seemed like a blend of Legend of Mana and Sword of Mana.

Riviera: The Promised Land (Game Boy Advance)
I didn't play this game but many gamers praised it for its unique gameplay and storyline. This game doesn't have any traditional dungeons. The gameplay is essentially battles with player's choices.
G
Emerald Dragon (SNES)
A slick 'forgotten' JRPG in the vein of Dragon Quest 6. Almost no one know about this game. The sprite assets are charming. This game needs to be added in the World of Longplay library.
live.staticflickr.com/65535/50550817592_56905ab543_m.jpg

Dual Orbs 2 (SNES)
This game reminds me of the Lunar series. The battle system artworks use a unique perspective that stood apart of other JRPGs of that era. It's worth looking for it.
i.ytimg.com/vi/aZSOwH0ksJs/hqdefault.jpg

Shining Wisdom (Saturn)
This game is similar to Zelda: A Link to the Past. I remember playing it back in the 1990s and I absolutely loved it. It has become a lost gem over the years, not many people talk about this game, yet it's a great enchanting quest with a powerful soundtrack.
live.staticflickr.com/65535/50550695516_4dd197dd0c_m.jpg

Magi Nation (game boy color)
One of the best looking RPGs on game boy color. It makes a good use of the hardware limitations.

Fire Emblem Awakening and Fire Emblem Fate (Nintendo 3DS)
I have played Awakening and I loved it so much. The storyline kept me pushing buttons to progress through each mission. The stereoscopic effect added a deep atmosphere to the game. It's definitely a triple-a game, hence it needs to be featured on World of Longplay.

Fire Emblem Fates and Fire Emblem Echoes (Nintendo 3DS)
I haven't played these ones but I'm sure they fully lived to the expectations. I think the 'Fates' game is split into two separate games while it's only one game in the japanese version.

Summon Night - Swordcraft Story 2 (GBA)
I don't know if there's an English patch for this one but I played it in Japanese without understanding anything and I enjoyed the battle system, the graphics and the music.

[big]Radiant Historia[/big]
(Nintendo DS and Nintendo 3DS)

live.staticflickr.com/65535/50596750642_851fe26022.jpg

This game is for time-travel lovers. I wouldn't say it's similar to Chrono Trigger but it's a very good alternative. There are two versions of this game. There is the original game released on the NDS, and then later a new version was released on the 3DS. Honestly, I think the artworks looked way better in the initial version.

[big]Bahamut Lagoon[/big]
(Super Nintendo)

live.staticflickr.com/65535/50596765922_cc2a9bdcfe.jpg

I've never played this game but it had always intrigued me. It seems to be a tactical game in the same vein as Fire Emblem. Graphics are reminiscent of impressive games at the end of the SNES era such as Final Fantasy 6, Secret of Mana 2 and Chrono Trigger.

[big]Heracles no Eikō 4[/big]
(Super Nintendo)

live.staticflickr.com/65535/50595921488_1d7d5bb6bf.jpg

Another cool looking RPG I've missed. It looks exactly like the old games I spent hours playing back then. I have no idea if there's an English patch. The only thing I know about this game are some of the music themes because they were featured in 'Game Music Concept' music albums and I loved those compositions so much.

[big]G.O.D.: Mezameyo to Yobu Koe ga Kikoe[/big]
(Super Nintendo)

live.staticflickr.com/65535/50595932288_85b7ef8732.jpg

Another SNES jRPG that looks interesting. Some scenes remind me of Final Fantasy 6.
G
[big]From the Abyss [/big]
(Nintendo DS)

This game should definitely appeal fans of the Mana series! The bosses look epic and dungeon crawling seems pretty fun. The game doesn't seem too long, it should be a quick job for interested longplayers.

live.staticflickr.com/65535/50628013236_b2dfc35a47.jpglive.staticflickr.com/65535/50627263413_8b7f964c18.jpglive.staticflickr.com/65535/50628108892_6002e8b01f.jpg

[big]Chaos Seed Feng Shui Chronicles[/big]
(Super Nintendo)

Oh wow, look at this game, it feels like playing dungeons from a Zelda game. It definitely seems to be a SNES hidden gem.

[big]Far East of Eden Zero | Tengai Makyou Zero[/big]
(Super Nintendo)

This jRPG for sure has beautiful graphics. I would be interested to watch a longplayer make a walkthrough of this game.

[big]Arcana[/big]
(Super Nintendo)

A cult classic jrpg in the same vein as Wizardry and Etrian Odyssey. Good fantasy vibe. The dungeon music tracks are quite memorable.

[big]Magic Knight Rayearth[/big]
(Sega Saturn)

It's an adventure JRPG in the vein of the Mana series, especially Legend of Mana. The tile-based visual style is georgous.

live.staticflickr.com/65535/50637078862_5601e96318.jpglive.staticflickr.com/65535/50637078897_e95762d571.jpglive.staticflickr.com/65535/50637078872_6fd93182d0.jpg

[big]Final Fantasy 12 - Revenant Wings[/big]
(Nintendo DS)

Oh boy, this game has been one of my favorite experiences on the Nintendo DS. The gameplay is quite addicting. It reminds me of Pikmin and it also borrows from many real-time strategy games such as Starcraft 2 and Warcraft III. The in-game dialogues are very well written and in a way the storyline is deeper than the real FF12 game.

[big]Scurge Hive[/big]
(Nintendo DS)

We could easily say this game is highly Metroid-inspired in a top-down view perspective. Definitely looks amazing.

[big]Vandal Heart 1[/big]
(Playstation 1)

Are you a fan of Final Fantasy Tactics and Suikoden? Then this game is for you, created by the once renowned Konami.

[big]Community Pom[/big]
(Super Nintendo)

Another game in the vein of the Mana and Zelda series. Or perhaps it feels more like Mystical Ninja.

Ravenlord
From the Abyss actually looks really good. I am a fan of Mana series and never heard about this game!
Sic Parvis Magna
G
Yup, From the Abyss looks almost as if it was a Mana game. I'm trying to make a compilation of many gems that were never recorded (at least in good quality) so feel free to watch this thread regularly as I update it almost every week. I'm spending a lot of time to search games most of us never heard of.
G
The Last Story
(Nintendo Wii)

This game was created by the creator of Final Fantasy, and I believe it was his very last big project until he began to focus on mobile games. This game seemed to have a solid storyline and fun gameplay style, sadly I didn't own a Wii back then.

Thanks for mentioning Power Blade 1 and 2. I'm glad they've been recorded.
G
Wars Advance 1 & 2

I'm surprised these games haven't been recorded yet Grin Those are two huge classics on the Game Boy Advance. I'm even more surprised there weren't sequel on future Nintendo consoles such as DS, 3DS and Switch. These tactical games were easy to play, quite innovative and addicting.

Heroes of Mana
(Nintendo DS)

I didn't even know the existence of this game until a few minutes ago. I thought 'Heroes of Mana' was the European name for 'Children of 'Mana' so I almost ignored it, but it's a real-time strategy rpg. Its looks extremely rare and obscure. It's even unpopular on YouTube, one or two guys recorded it. Here's the gameplay, in bad quality:

I'm still wishing my above lists will inspire some longplayers to record more jRPGs. For months most releases were really short games on Commodor64 and Amiga, not that it's bad, but I think more occasional jRPGs would be fantastic.
