Player's Review
"It's time to add brains to your game playing arsenal! Tons of Game Play!
Puggsy takes you through 50+ levels of play, full of secret rooms, hidden levels and other cool surprises, solving puzzles and zapping 100+ different alien creatures as he waddles his way through 17 bizarre lands. Introducing Total Object Interaction (TOI) Puggsy actually uses his arms to control 40 interactive objects, in this incomparable adventure, full of great sound effects, and original tunes. Special Introductory Training Levels for Novices."
Puggy was originaly released for the Mega-Drive in 1993 followed by a further improved game for the Mega-CD. It saw a conversion to the Amiga in 1994. A SNES version was developed but canned before release. The Puggsy character started out as an Amiga demo shown to Psygnosis called Puggs in Space.
You control a Space Hopper that has crash landed and needs to get his ship back from the Raccoons. There are many levels split up over themed areas as well as many hidden levels to find. The levels are all fairly short and simple with a little puzzle solving. Many levels have objects like guns, coins, glasses, shoes, ducks and while not all of them are instantly useful, they may be used for extra score by taking them tot he end of the level. Some objects may be used to interreact with other objects or just used to help boost you up a platform by stacking them. All the objects have a level of physics to them so throwing them or stacking badly can effect how they move and how they interreact with each other. Getting hit by an enemy is an instant loss of a life. new lives can be found by taking an hearts found into the exit. Collecting the glasses adds an additional hit point and the shoes awards extra speed and jump height as well as an additional hit point.
The longplay starts off with the Junior levels. These are simple levels to get you accustomed to the games mechanics. Following these the Normal mode is played which goes through all levels as they appear. If a level has two doors I will replay those levels and then show the secret rooms they open before continuing on the main path. I leave the last two secret areas in the initial run so that the Normal ending is shown. Following completion I go back to the Hidden Room and show 'shoes' which awards .. shoes followed by 'cheat' mode which awards infinite lives and turns you green before moving on to unlocking the remaining two secret areas and showing the bonus ending. Annoyingly this ending cant be skipped and a console reset is required. Unlike the Amiga game we don't need to fight the final boss again for the ending and you need to have defeated all earlier bosses before it will let you play the dock stages. The normal end of the game the credits will give a 'Silly maths question' to solve. The result is the passcode to play six bonus stages.
11125 sqrd minus 181 = 123 765 444
13307 sqrd minus 712 = 177 075 537
21385x21386 sub 1875 = 457 337 735
Overall, The Mega-Drive game is the original and probably the best and is much easier to control than the Amiga game due to having three buttons available and you can lower/lift items at any time. The Sega-Cd game is good with added effects and bosses but lacks some of the music and on that note it also uses some music from the canned snes game. There are also so very slight difference with the Junior levels between the EU and US releases of the game.
