Player's Review

The original Warcraft game released in 1994 introduced some new features when compared to Dune 2 by Westwood Studios. In Dune 2 the whole battlefield was more or less an open space and the addition of rivers, trees and such opened possibilities for increasing variation in level designs (including cave missions). This game at least had the attempt to make more specialized units when compared to something that only moves and shoots. WC also introduced the dedicated worker unit and different types of resource. I like perhaps the darker atmosphere in this game better compared to brighter WC2. In every other way WC2 is a better game and perhaps a bigger leap for RTS genre.

Four units / group limit is an improvement, but not by much. For some mysterious reason you also need to press control in addition to mouse while selecting units to a group instead of just holding the mouse button. Its not possible to cast spells while units are grouped and there is no autocasting for spells such as healing and raise dead. Lack of quick keys for buildings and groups leads to lack of proper control of units. Player is still forced to find specific buildings and units by scrolling the map to that location. Player lacks the chance to control buildings in base without zooming the main screen there and clicking a building. Lack of rally points for buildings forces the player to zoom into base and move each unit separately to front lines. Terrain obstacles introduced serious or at least annoying pathing problems to the genre.

Every human special is better when compared to Orcs. Many units are more or less useless. In campaign game there's not much point to build melee units when you can get a ranged unit at the same price and then theres no need to upgrade melee weapons either. When accessed major summon, then you only need summoners.

CD does contain separate audio tracks, but these can't be played during the game so general MIDI was selected instead with SGM-V2.01 soundfont. Unfortunately theres no volume control for speech and SFX get too loud at times.
