Player's Review

"With no rules, no limits an no pit stopping, anything goes in this collision course of crumple zones, hit & run mayhem, and steel level slamming where wrecking your opponent's motor in ultra-realistic smashes and crashes is the name of the game. Take on the rigours of a full Championship season and pit your wits against a motley crew of psycho-waster racers such as the Suicide Squaddies, Skum and The Optician as you storm up the rankings from Rookie to Pro."

A genre defining title when it originaly released on the PS1 and PC. While racing on a closed circuit was noting new, being able to smash up other cars on your way round in a believable demolition derby was. Together with a pumping sound track made this a stand out title together with Wipeout released around the same time put Sony, and Psygnosis on top.

A year later, it was Saturn's time to shine. The game didn't get a US release for some reason so the Japanese version is being played and its exactly as you would expect the US version to be. Unfortunately like with Wipeout, the conversion didn't live up to the original but in fairness does still play ok even if its running at half the framerate. Somehow this makes it easier to play than the SP1 game, especially the Bowl at the end of each championship division. There is also some blatant collision detection issues at play which make it appear as you are passing right through some cars.

In the longplay, I play using the Pro car which is fast but twitchy to control as its way to easy too oversteer especially when braking. In each division you need to get the most points after playing five races and total destruction in The Bowl. Points are claimed by getting a high finishing position in the race as well as smashing up other cars in particular ways. Forcing a car to spin 360, especially the front car gets you the most points as well as forcing them to crash into the barrier and especially destroying their car. Using the Pro car, I use its speed to mainly win the race. The slower cars may depend more on damage points. Once the game is completed, a extra level is unlocked but it can only be played in practice mode and it doesnt award anything for winning.
