Player's Review

Panzer Dragoon for the Sega Saturn released by Sega in 1995. An impressive looking game for the time and one of the and also Saturn launch game giving a glimpse of what the Saturn could do. A system seller and one of the few must own games. Normally the game opens up directly into the intro sequence which is repeated at the games start. I instead open the video with the games trailer and then the intro is shown when starting the game.

The game play is of the rail shooter variety so is quite easy to pick up and play. However due to the game low approximate 20fps frame rate it can be difficult to aim as you some times overshoot your target. Moving the dragon around sways the camera can also cause you to miscalculate where the cursor will end up. The frame rate is locked however so it never jars causing the cursor to change speed. In a way the game is much better to watch than to play but I'm in no way saying its a bad game. The game has a great soundtrack that fits the level designs perfectly and there is a story unfolding as you progress through the game.

After completing the game and being rewarded with the Hard Ending, it gives me a code which enables wizard mode. I enable a cheat to show the red Sega girl as well as the Wizard mode. I play through wizard mode which causes the game to now run at 30 fps. There is no special ending or reward for completing this mode however. The cursor is a lot less janky at this speed but takes some adjustment getting used to the speed of it. In my mind the game should have been 30 fps from the start with the enemies moving around at a more normal speed. The extra smoothness would have made it a more enjoyable game I think.

Afterwards I enter a cheat for Episode 0. This seems to be a score attack survival mode of sorts. You constantly lose energy and need to keep attacking to gain energy back. It goes on for a long while but does eventually end. The game locked up/crashed right after the score screen so I dunno if there is supposed to be any rewards for beating this mode or not.
