Player's Review

Panzer Dragoon II Zwei is a rail shooter released exclusively for the Sega Saturn in 1996. A prequel to the first Panzer Dragoon, it was developed by Team Andromeda, one of Sega's internal development studios.

Panzer Dragoon II, like the previous game is a rail shooter allowing for full 360 degree targeting and chaining of special weapon attacks. Introduced in this version is a berserk fire mode which charges while you play and you can unleash when the action gets a bit heavy as it makes you invulnerable while it is firing. The game doesn't have an initial difficulty setting but instead offers multiple routes through the early stages of the game. Harder routes offer extra points at the end of the level. These points as well as those rewarded for level cleared and kill count add up to your total dragon level. Your dragon evolves as it levels giving more health and a more powerful weapon. able to lock onto more targets at once. The game also now runs at a steady 30fps making it easier to aim as well. This is how a sequel should be (but its a prequel -Ed.) The whole game feels like an upgrade over the previous with more varied gfx, a faster engine, some new abilities and another killer soundtrack that fits the game perfectly. Again showing off what the Saturn can do in the right hands.

In this video I show two play through's. In the first run, I take the easy route through the game with the aim of reaching a 100% kill rate. Getting 100% unlocks Pandoras Box which is essentially the cheat modes of the game. In the second run, I show taking the harder routes which in turn gives me a higher dragon level. Getting maximum points gives me 'Solo Wing' the blue dragon from the first game and awards the best? ending to the game leading onto the next (first) game. Strangely the ending is the shortest by far. This run also shows the hud in full info mode which shows off the scoring system.

With the game completed I make use of Pandora's Box. Pandora's box can be unlocked in a few ways such as completing the game 30 times or a total played time of 30 hours. a 100% kill count as shown here or a save Game from Panza Dragoon Saga which is kind of odd as that game wasn't released until two years later although was started in 1995. I use Pandora's Box mode to 'Zero Space'. This is a series of 6 levels which acts as a time trial. Try as I might, I can not beat the record times which to me seem a bit suspect. I have to Kill myself to end this mode. To finish off the game has 5 ending depending on which dragon level you ended the game with. I show the remaining 3 endings and associated staff roles which all differ slightly in what artwork they show. I then end with some promotional videos.
