Player's Review
"A super mid-air battle! Do you want to experience a high speed shooting packed with excitement?
"Space Megaforce". The game's thrilling speed is its most attractive feature. The enemy movements are fast. Your shots and the enemies' shots are fast. Finally, the scrolling is fast. The screen filled with battle action just overflows with high speed shooting excitement. On top of that there is the Shot Control System operated with the "R" button. You can attack the enemy in a multitude of ways with a weapon using this system. Naturally, the features of the Super NES such as rotation, enlarging, and shrinking functions are used to their fullest and huge enemies never before possible are packed into this exciting MEGA game!"
An Aleste game for the SNES and just like previous games it utilises some nice gfx effects to stand out from other titles. I think they missed a trick with the intro considering it was narrated in the mega-drive game cheaping out on the overall presentation of the game. If you can look past that then its onto the game. As expected the game is a vertical shoot em up which has you destroying enemies and facing off against a boss at the end of each stage Along the way you can collect one of eight weapons as they fly by as well as orange eggs which contribute to levelling up the weapons. A green egg will add one full level. Part of the trick to the game is knowing when to best utilise each weapon but with so much going on, its difficult to keep track of things but that's a me problem not the fault of the game.
There are some nice transparency effects utilised as well as some zoom and rotation going on. Some nice backgrounds which give the impression of depth. Sometimes it can be hard to tell what is placed in each layer so not always sure if there is something to crash into or fly over, again a me problem! The hit detection on your ship is very forgiving leading to some 'how did I survive that' moments you do kind of get a shield as well with your weapon levels being bumped down when taking hits as well as limited duration shield when collecting the eggs. A special function is also available that can put each weapon into an alt fire modes depending on the weapon.
The longplay goes through the standard game mode on Hyper difficulty. It gets a bit crazy but I try to show each weapon as they are levelled up as well as there alt fire. There is no real strategy to the weapons I pick but I try to give each one some show time, even the less useful ones. Following completion of the game I show 'shortgame' mode which consists of four short levels in a kind of practice mode. There are no continues in this mode if you die.
