Player's Review

"It's an imaginary world that's real. It exists in another dimension, where cartoon characters, called Doodles, are alive. It's Cool World. For cartoonist Jack Deebs, who's been carried across the boundary, it's a wild and amazing place; and he's discovered that only some of the Doodles are friendly. Take Holli Would. She's a knockout Doodle who's really interested in Jack. She's interested in using him to get herself a real body and transfer into this world. She just needs to get her hands on one special piece of magic. The Golden Spike of Power, hidden atop the Ocean Hotel in Las Vegas, is the powerful wedge between Cool World and this world. And Holli's trying to steal it. If she removes it, she may destroy both her world and Jack's. As Jack, you've got to stop her from doing it- because you know she will if she can!"

I'm familiar with the 8 and 16-bit home computer version developed by Twilight and published by Ocean but this SNES game developed by Painting by numbers for ocean Software is completely different. Cool World was never a great film and they two games are not exactly fondly remembered interpretations of the film. The SNES game is very short and can be completed in about 15mins if you know what you are doing. It could not be any more phoned in if it tried. The graphics a very well done but there are maybe only twelve unique screens. It's ridiculous when the cartridge cost an eye watering £44.99 back in 1993. There is no intro sequence as such so I cant even say it is well presented as the home computer versions.

For this longplay i went the long way around in an attempt to show as much of the games content as possible without messing up progression to badly. Much of the stuff I do is not required at all and just there to help boost score. In the opening level there is a pawn shop with a few items and the pen is really the only useful one there. Its quite possible to misspend your coins here as well as loose sweets needed to access another area which will cause progression issues. A couple of books with clues already revealed elsewhere and a couple items I'm not sure do anything useful. I think the boot helps with removing the from in sweet zone. There is a bank where you can store coins as well as gain interest over time. This may be useful if you lose other held coins later by getting robbed or having to pay release bail. When reaching the Sweety area it best not to collect all sweets, just those needed to access the mail shop (five I think) just in case you lose any held later. You need the pen for when you return to the realworld to suck up the doodles. This is on a timer and you will be pulled away when it happens. Completing the game rewards you with a code to watch the same credits it is about to show you.

There is not much else to say. It's all over quite quickly. The collision detection can be very suspect at times but id say the hardest part of the game is probably the driving sections as its not that easy to line up where you want to land as well as taking damage if you hit anything. Overall not a great game and kind of feels unfinished as there is not a lot of use for all the coins and sweets and even items in the game as it is.
