Player's Review

"The Year - 2089. The Place - the desolate surfaces of the asteroids in the HyperZone Asteroid Belt. The enemy - time, the hostile environment, sweltering heat, bone-chilling cold, and the endless double track of HyperZone. Traveling at hyper-speed, skimming the surface of the asteroid, eyes burning from seeking an elusive enemy, finger coiled on the trigger - it's going to be a long, terrifying ride..."

The Super Nintendo answer to Space Harrier? It's a nice psychedelic tunnel rail shooter utilising the infamous Mode-7. The US release is being played which had quite a few differences compared with JP release including level order and names amongst others.

There are eight levels with the last level being a boss rush, facing off against the seven previous bosses before a new big bad and ugly foe. Each track can split into multiple lanes which can help with an energy refill or hinder with more deadly enemies. You can switch lane at any time but it will cost some energy as you cross the barrier. Energy loss also happens if you venture from either side of the track as well as getting hit by enemies.

After earning a specific number of points you will hear a ding! and a new ship will await you on the next level as well as an extra life (stock) . Each new ship will be stronger, a little faster and more importantly, charge shots faster. In the longplay you will see me leave each level at a speed of 333kph. Doing so will award you with an extra life and is the only way to earn more after getting all ships.

At the end of the game, the boss is killed and the credits roll. Although I end the longplay here, the game does in fact loop and continue on from level one with all the lives and ship level you had at the end of the previous level allowing you to boost your score further. There is nothing new to see but more power to you if you soldier on!

The game does include a 3D mode which I have recorded previously utilising frame sequential 3D. Of course no glasses were ever released for the Snes so not many have likely played the game in this mode. The old recording is linked as a secondary download for those that can view it.
