Player's Review

SNES port of Wing Commander - The Secret Missions played on Ace difficulty (Default)

The game uses an engine specifically built for the snes. This makes the game insanely easier than the pc original due to how it works, yet annoying at the same time due to its limitations.

The game is longer than the previous game as this game throws so many more enemies at you to work through. The ai is dumb as dirt and missiles dont do any significant damage in this version so there is very little to hurt the player in this version of the game. The game engine only allows 1 enemy to be in focus at a time so you never get shot at by multiple ships. A massive flaw in the game though is when the ships dont want to come into focus, no amount of shooting will be able to hit them. The frame rate is very eratic which makes it hard to aim and often overshoot the target. Added with the very low fire rate makes the stronger weapons useless. Far easier to stick with slightly weaker lasers and land more shots.

This all comes to cause me a great annoyance in the last 2 levels making them really long as I try to fight an enemy that doesn't want to fight back. You cant just afterburn to them as the distance never closes. I often have to turn the engines of and act as a turret just so the enemy doesnt kamikaze into me. 2nd to last mission I have to defend the Tigers claw and the enemies are not interested in fighting so they never come into focus to attack. I use this opportunity to show the eject animation. On the final mission the final cruiser just didn't want to die. and my wingman didnt want to help out either and just floated around.

Other notable differences in the snes port are that you cant roll your ship and their are no side or rear views. There is also no need to communicate with the wingman as they will automatically break and attack. The takeoff-landing sequences are quite different. Most glaring of all, no cockpit damage.
