Player's Review

"ASPHALTS NEVER BEEN SO HOT. More than 44 prestigious licenced cars with insane tuning options plus some extremely powerful motorbikes! Get ready for spectacular takedowns on 14 tracks in the most beautiful cities in the world, all available in reverse mode. Arcade and Evolution mode including 62 championships."

Here we go again, another mobile racing game ported to new systems including PSP and the DS. In fairness, it is better than the first game but it really is just a prettier version of the previous game with tweaks to the presentation and the gameplay ramped up to be more like Burnout. Most of the tracks are recognisable rehashes from the first game so you might feel cheated if you have put your 20 hours into the first game and expected something new from the games sequel. The gameplay though is much faster and chaotic with plenty money and boosts to collect as well as police to outrun. The game is notably easier then the first game with very little challenge. You don't even need to win all events, just gain enough overall points to get the gold cup. The opposition finishing position is highly erratic so you don't need to worry about beating one particular driver each race.

Unfortunately it has the same major problem as the first game which leads to repetitive gameplay and doesn't take long for the game to lose its lustre leading to boredom. 62 championships it says on the box, but why! An arcade racing experience does not need to be dragged out that long, playing the same content over and over and over although there is more variation than the first game, it's not saying much.

The longplay is in two parts. The first is Evolution mode which goes through many many championships requiring specific cars. This mode goes on for far too long and eventually unlocks 2 bonus cars for use in arcade mode. You don't need to buy to many cars for this mode and I do hold onto the money and reuse many cars just in case it decided you need to buy every expensive car near the end of the game.

Part two is arcade mode is in probably the only enjoyable bit of the game. You pick the event type and track you want to race on and try to earn money as you go by taking down opponents and police as well as smashing up scenery objects and speeding through speed traps. Tracks, cars and events unlock as you go. There is no ending to this mode. However, if the object of this mode is to get one million and unlock the final car, some bad design decisions make this a chore. Everything but two bonus cars are unlocked by 500k and its a slog to grind for the last two. What would have been better is to award more money per race and space out the unlocks so that you are still earning things up to that one million goal. I pretty much stick to race mode as the others take longer to reach and equal amount of winnings. I could have just stuck to fastest vehicle and shortest track the whole way but that would have made an already boring video even more so.

Overall the game looks nice but it soon becomes a chore and not fun to play and the inclusion of pussycat doll images doesn't save it. This was partially fixed at least by Asphalt Elite Racing with a reasonably game length by dropping the evolution mode but it seemed unfinished with nothing happening once everything was completed.
