Player's Review
'Unleash your inner chimp in Space Chimps! Play as both Ham the Third and Luna to free the imprisoned aliens of the planet Malgor. Use your brains and acrobatic brawn to survive thick alien jungles, escape dry desolate canyons, and well-guarded dungeons in order to defeat the evil Zartog and find your way home!'
From the same developers of Looney Tunes: Acme Arsenal and Jumper: Griffin's Story, this is some platformer based on the film of the same name. Additional ports for PC, PS2 and X360 exist, with the latter featuring upgraded visuals.
You control a couple of chimps, each one having their own set of attacks and abilities: Ham can perform melee moves and Luna makes use of her 'mascot' as a whip and also a gun to shoot certain targets in order to access new areas. Nothing special as there are no upgrades for them, except for the additional butterfly ability that is exclusive to Luna and is acquired halfway through the game. The only collectibles here are the 'globhoppers' and a DOLE-branded huge banana (one in each level), both unlock concept art and alternate costumes for the chimps.
In terms of gameplay mechanics it's somewhat tolerable, but I cannot say the same for the shooting section/minigames due to poor hit detection in them. I criticized about it in their Looney Tunes game and seems the same issue is happening here, which makes me think they did not properly test their games before releasing them. At least they decided to balance things more by adding a health auto-refill feature during these sections. Oh and unfortunately there is no way to get more weapons unlike in Looney Tunes, which is a shame considering its difficulty.
Overall a short game that in my opinion it's acceptable to some extent, as long as you know how to deal with the hit detection flaw in the shooting stage. At the end I show off the minigames, which are the same thing except for the background, the concept art and all unlockable costumes for showcasing purposes.
