"GT cars jump out of the circuit and race through the city!! The all-Japan GT Championship is a popular car race. A new stage called "city area'' has been added as a circuit to their racing scene! "CITY TOUR GRANDPRIX'' As the name suggests, "Public Road Grand Prix'' has become a reality! "The roads you usually drive on become a circuit. !", KYO This is a completely new racing game that has never been seen before. In addition, 14 famous machines from the JGTC500 class will be featured. 28 famous and popular drivers such as Aguri, Much, the Kageyama brothers, and Hoshino will appear and drive through special circuits in Tokyo, Kyoto, and Lake Kawaguchi!"
This appears to be an extended version of 'GT64: Championship Edition' released in the US/EU which swaps out the USA and EUR tracks for more Japanese tracks. However completing the championship will unlock the USA short and long courses allowing for another championship run of eight courses instead of six.
The game is similar to Sega's SuperGT or GT24 but not nearly as good or fun to play. The presentation is reasonable enough but the actual racing just does not feel right with a big emphasis on sliding and the overall low framerate doesnt really convey a good sense of speed and control.
The game is quite short with an initial six tracks but you can set between 3 and 24 laps to lengthen it out if you really wanted. Completing the game opens up the USA short and long courses adding to the championship mode for eight races. I wanted to play as Porsche or Lamborghini but I found they slide out way to much and take too long to regain traction causing you to lose speed as the wheels just spin. The Supra is more manageable as well as fast enough to win on Hard difficulty although you do ideally qualify for the front of the pack to make this possible. One saving grace though which is quite rare in racing games is that the finishing order varies so that you not just racing against the same opponent the whole game that gets 1st if you don't.
After the credits roll I replay the Championship on Normal using the Skyline and don't need the qualifying laps this time. After eight races a second set of credits are rolled with some nice new pictures. Overall this seems easier than the US/EU game GT64. There did not appear to be an unlock for reverse tracks in this version.
