"Nail 'em to the wall! Quake 64! An enhanced and action-packed version of the PC mega-hit. NOW DEVELOPED EXCLUSIVELY FOR THE NINTENDO 64! A true 3D polygonal environment that includes the most horrific creatures to grace a console. Startling dynamic lighting, levels designed by the masters, and an arsenal of the most awesome weaponry to match."

Based on the work done on Doom 64, it didn't take much convincing to get the licence for Quake 64. Whilst Quake 64 mostly follows the original quake with no new levels or texture work, the game does get the PSX/N64 Doom lighting system to add some much needed colour to the otherwise gloomy and dark quake levels. I'm not a fan of the gloomy music in Doom64 but it does work ok in Quake 64 as it is set in a dark medieval gloomy world anyway and fits quite well. Quake 64 contains 25 of the originals 31 levels and whilst some levels have a few cosmetic changes here and there, they are mostly the same as the original with a few secret areas moved or removed.

The most notable difference is that there is no 'Welcome to Quake' level where you would normal go and choose which episode to play. In Quake 64, all the levels are stitched together in one long run. However!, the interlude end of episode messages are still here and when starting the next episode, your weapons are not carried through so you end up starting over which is not how it was managed in Doom 64. The biggest hurdle of this game for me is the controls. Considering how well they worked in doom, its surprising how bad they are here. I have made extensive changes to the default setup but it still does not feel right as you need to move your thumbs from the movement controls to the look controls at times for aiming.

I did start out recording in Hard mode but soon got annoyed with it as enemies would spawn on top of you when hitting switches and dealing with shamblers and fiends by level three was annoying especially when they come back to life! Normal can be a bit to easy at the start but gets challenging later on and helps keep the video moving and not just shooting from behind corners constantly. The longplay aims to show a complete run of game including all secrets and secret levels and hopefully as much of the map as possible. After completing the game I play few levels with the Fullscreen blur filter on to show any differences. The image looks overall less sharp but has better colour blending especially on wall textures. Playing with the filter off was more palatable to having every texture looking super low res.

Overall a goof version of the quake as good version to try if revisiting the game to see how the enhanced colours change the mood of the levels. Only the controls act as a hindrance.
