"ACCELERATED ADRENALINE RUSH RACING
The fastest races. The deadliest weapons. The biggest name in anti- gravity racing descends on N64 with incredible new visual power and fully enhanced gameplay glory. With blistering races, challenges, time trials and a multiplay league, Wipeout 64 delivers pure racing devastation. Faster than you can imagine.
- 6 huge new race circuits with jaw-dropping environments
- 15 vicious weapons ranging from electrobolts to the devastating power snare
- 5 different racing teams and 4 racing classes with varying difficulty levels
- Intense 1-4 player split screen action
- Challenging 15 craft competition heats with multiple racing modes including time trials and tournament play
- Pounding electronica soundtrack featuring Propellerheads and Fluke"
Nintendo 64 entry of the Wipeout franchise which became a hit on the PS1 in 1995. This isn't really a 100% longplay due to Game or Emu issues. I unlocked all 4 Gold challenges, but was unable to go back into the time and combo challenges menu screen without the game freezing up, so I was unable to show the two remaining challenges.
I find the game really difficult, far more difficult than the ps1 and Amiga/pc versions which I have completed. The analogue controls should make it easier, but becomes a hindrance as you often need hard left/right (simulating the Digitial dpad) to get round corners at speed.. The L and R Airbrakes just don't work as well as I expect them to. The game gets insanely fast requiring only minute input else you risk flying across the track into a wall. However once you get the rhythm you can pull of some heart stopping turns barely scraping the walls with a slight touch of the controls which feels amazing when it goes your way. The games biggest departure from the original games is the fact that you don't race in specific speed tiered tournaments. Instead you race some pre-setup challenges in a given challenge type, often giving you a ship not best suited to the particular track.
The Race challenges start off slow to lure you in but soon ramps the difficult as you initially only have 3 laps to get things done and the ai racers don't exactly just let you win even on these low speed levels. The original games are far more forgiving. The Time Trials are done over a single lap and you only get one boost to use at the time of your choosing. The requirements for gold are mind boggling but the last three are strangely easier than the first three. The weapon challenges are easier than I make it look as you don't really need to race these. Just keep in the time limit, hold back and shoot at all craft. You still need to complete all laps so I tried to get the needed kills along the way. Completing this challenge unlocks the Cyclone weapons which finally make all weapons useful and the upcoming challenges easier.
Completing the Race, Time and weapon challenges unlocks the Super-Combo challenge set. This one is rough as you need to achieve a kill rating as well as win. Challenge Five specifically can be a show stopper as you need eight kills using only the barrier which is the weakest in the game as well as getting to the front of the pack which can be found on the final lap. Completing the challenge set unlocks the final gold challenges sadly not playable currently. I close the video with a Single race on the unlocked Velocitar track at Phantom Speed followed by manually rolling the credits.
00:00:00 - Demo
00:02:12 - Race Challenges 1 - 6. All Gold and gold challenge unlocked. Velocitar Track unlocked.
00:20:24 - Race Gold Challenge
00:23:15 - Time Trials 1 - 6. All Golds. Gold challenge unlocked. Piranha II craft unlocked.
00:30:06 - Weapon challenges 1 - 6 All Golds. Gold challenge unlocked. Cyclone unlocked. Super-Combo challenges unlocked
00:49:32 - Weapon Gold Challenge
00:52:00 - Super Combo challenges 1 - 6. All Golds. Gold Challenge Unlocked.
And that's pretty much all the challenges over. The game wont let me enter gold challenges without locking up. So there is maybe another Well Done screen not shown in this video although I do know the background effect turns gold when you have completed all challenges.
