Player's Review

"Travel through time and enter into the world of Atlantis, an ancient and incredibly sophisticated civilization. On this island on which wealth of every kind abounds, peace is kept by Queen Rhea. However, her realm is no linger safe. You must become Seth, the young hero of a mystery that spans 5 continents, find the Queen and save the pacific world."

Not to be confused with the Disney game 'Atlantis: The Lost empire' released later in 2001, Cryo Interactives Atlantis the Lost Tales is a walking simulator style adventure much like Myst and Riven by Cyan productions that came before it. However those two games were much better produced especially the PlayStations release of them.

The game was released on multiple formats most notable PC and Mac with ports to Saturn and PS1. The game is rare case where the Saturn version is much more comparable to the pc game. The PS1 game shown here is very slow with long loading times between scenes. The game uses a checkpoint system which can be saved to memory card. Should you die you get to restart from the last checkpoint. There is no lives system so get to retry a chapter as many times as you like. Most chapters a short but there are a few which are quite dialogue heavy and can be annoying if you have to start over.

The game is played by rotating through a 360 degree view of where you are and then pointing in the direction you want to go to move to the next scene if available. A single button is used to click items or start dialogue on a character if available. A second button is used to open the inventory window. Sometimes puzzles are encountered which require more functions and a handy help screen is shown before hand. Occasionally there will be some time sensitive sections requiring fast movements with the time limit being quite strict. It might take a few goes to get past some parts.

In the longplay I show a playthrough of the game with most of the dialogue options available to me. Some lead to death and some lead to the same responses. I may have missed a few when a companion is following you as you need to go into your inventory to talk to them in that case. At the end of the game I add some of the death scenes encountered. There are others that lead to the same ending dialogue.

Overall, the game plays very slowly (the ps1 version at least) with lots of dry dialogue to explain what's going on. Not all of it needs to be done to progress in the game and there are plenty of optional parts shown. There is lots of backtracking and revisiting of areas which can be tiresome. I was glad when I eventually got to the end of this one. I didn't find it as enjoyable as the Myst games.

Note: A Second download option has been provided where I have allowed the emu to (poorly) scale to 4:3 the Anim/walking scenes to match which may provide a more natural way to watch the game.
