After the success of the Previous Wipeout games, a third was bound to appear but for this one they have gone in a slightly different direction. The game has undergone a massive graphical upgrade setting all the tracks inside futuristic cities with much tighter tracks and new teams and craft to compete with. The game is running in a higher res and overall gives the impression that the developers are pushing the Playstation to its limits. The game is packed with content and things to do. As well as the Single races you have the speed class tournaments, elimination mode and challenge mode which contains events lifted from Wipeout 64.

That said, I don't find it a fun game in the series thanks to the way game progression works. Single Race is the main mode. There are 4 speed classes (3 initially) with 64 possible races in each after meeting requirements for unlocking the extra four tracks and four craft. While you don't need to complete every race with a gold rating, doing so will unlock the fours secret prototype tracks. Unlike WO3se, there are no ending movies so going through everything is even less rewarding. None of the other game modes have an ending for completing all stages and ultimately the whole game does not feel very rewarding at all for the amount of content there is to complete even if there is no reason to do so as there is nothing to unlock outside of single race mode.

Recording every single mode seems overkill for me as there would be no new content to see or unlock and the only difference would be the objective. For the sake of video time I have taken the route of completing every Single Race in vector mode with a gold rating to unlock the prototype track, basically to show how it is achieved. I then do the minimal amount of races to get through Venom and Rapier to unlock Phantom and then onto the ending ... Oh wait, there is no ending and no auto credit roll. I enter a cheat to unlock all Proto tracks and then show them.

To finish off I play through all the tournaments which take you you through the four speed tiers but ultimately doesn't reward anything for completing it. I play with the Cockpit Hud enabled throughout this mode which only adds to the challenge. No scores are shown which was fixed in the special edition. I end the video with the games credits which are shown as part of the attract mode.

Overall for me, this is the weakest of the Wipeout games because it feels like grinding away your time for no pay off in the end. You just know there would be a gold every event in every mode trophy to slow your progression to platinum if it were to be released today. Most of the Single Player progression issues were fixed in the Special Edition so there is no complex route to unlock all the tracks and vehicles. Whilst this longplay is nowhere near complete, I have done all I want to show with the game as essentially, it just the same content over , over and over with some rule changes.
