Player's Review

The X-Files Game is an interactive movie point-and-click adventure video game developed by HyperBole Studios and first published by Fox Interactive. The game was released for Microsoft Windows, Mac OS and PlayStation in 1998, and is based on the television series The X-Files. The game comes on 4 cds which is quite large for a playstation game. There are some audio issues related to emulation but I hope it doesn't spoil the longplay too much.

The game is very dark so best played in low light conditions. The adventure starts off very slow as you start the investigation into finding Mulder and Scully. Me spending time looking at random objects doesn't help the pace either but I felt at the time there were interesting to include. The action picks up in the last 3rd of the game and you start noticing notable set pieces from the series.

The game plays a lot like the Myst games in that each screen transitions into another image or video. Although the game has multiple things to say, I usually just click through them all just to show what can be said and then game lets you move on. Would have been easier to just make 1 long video sequence in these parts. Later you get multiple choices for things to say. Some will lead down a path that gets you killed and others will allow you to progress. The story isn't really dictated by your actions as it is linier and deviating from it results in your death leading to only one outcome if you make it to the end.

Overall, I didn't really enjoy this game due to slow progression and being too dark, but its still an interesting game to watch and have it fit in nicely with the series.
