Player's Review

Third game in the series and this time developed by Studio33 and published by Midway. Reflections had moved on to make the driver series. The game uses a 256x256 display mode and maybe best viewed setting your player to 16:9 to aspect correct it.

This game goes back to what made the original Destruction Derby work while adding some features of Destruction Derby 64. The game engine is reasonable for the time although slows down a lot when lots of cars are on screen. You can race and smash in this game as you can keep up with the opponents while doing some damage. There is also a limited turbo boost to get you going again should you come to a stop. The damage meter from DD64 is most welcome as once your armour is gone, you can take a certain amount of punishment before the car gives up, a much better system than the previous two games.

In Part 1 of this video I play through Wrecking Racing Mode where I play all 25 track and gain just enough points to scrape through to the next one. 5 of the 8 bonus cars are unlocked in this mode and you get a little fmv cut scene when winning each one. There is no ending for beating this mode.

In Part 2 I play Smash4$ (Smash for Cash) mode where you need to win money to buy cars and upgrade them. You also need to repair them after every race before you can continue and the more expensive the car, the more expensive the repair. You can store multiple cars in your garages. the last 3 of the 8 bonus cars are also unlocked during play of this mode. I try off the 3 super cars and jus manage to get the last one before the last few races.

I go through all 25 tracks again but this time in a preset order. The end credits are shown after completing Smash4$ and then it allows you to go round again if you want to gain more money and more cars.
