Player's Review

Originally named Drift King, Tokyo Highway Battle is the first game in the Shutok? Battle series. It simulated illegal highway racing, which was most popular in the 60's and in Tokyo. The game was released 1996 for the PlayStation consoles and developed by Genki.

A fairly difficult racing game to complete, but even if you lose you still win some money and will eventually be able to afford enough upgrades to progress in the game. It is presented as a Japanese drifting game. I dislike drifting in racing games as I suck at it so you wont see much of it here. Note the gameplay display is in a smaller screen mode than the menus so you may want to aspect correct video to 16:9 to resemble tv aspect.

The game offers three tracks which you need to complete 3 times. For the first run I show all 3 starting cars (one one each track) without any upgrades in order to maximise points for later rounds. These early races are not to difficult but you could buy brake and tyre upgrades to make them a little easier. Once the three tracks are completed another class of cars is unlocked. From this point I use just one car. If you change car you will lose all upgrades making the game very difficult. Once I get round to the third round, another class of cars is unlocked but I choose to stay on my current car as it is already better than the new cars due to upgrades. Defeating the drift king on the last track wins the game and unlocks the remaining cars.

Once the game is beat, all cars are unlocked and you can use R2 to change between 2 car paints. I show off one of the new fast cars in CPU VS mode and defeat the drift king again quite easily as all upgrades are unlocked as well. Nothing else is unlocked after this point so i end the video here.

The game is very difficult on the third run and probably not meant to be beaten on first attempt and more upgrades should have been obtained first for an easier time.
