Player's Review

Colony Wars III: Red Sun released on Playstation in the year 2000 by Psygnosis. By now I have recorded all three games and in hindsight i think i should have played the PAL versions as they are European original games and support a higher resolution. The extra framerate of the ntsc release doesn't add much. The game uses the 512x hires mode and uses mixed resolution so you may want to aspect correct the video to 16:9 in your player to view gameplay with TV aspect.

From Wiki "The game is set around the time frame of Vengeance. A miner in the Dendray system named Alexander Lyron Valdemar experiences strange dreams about an alien race called the Sha'Har and a mysterious ship called the Red Sun. A man known as the General forces him to get on the case of investigating the Red Sun and how it is tied to the survival of the galaxy."

The game takes place on the outer rim around the same time as the previous Vengeance game. This game does not utilise a branching story arc depending on your actions. Instead you get a choice of missions where you can take on jobs for credits and kill score to improve your rating unlocking new weapons and ships for you to buy. You could skip these and just do story missions, but i am sure they would be difficult if you could not afford upgrades. I do not show off many of the weapons and don't by any means use an optimal setup as I mostly just stick to what works. No doubt there are other strategies that are better than mine. Also new to the game is multiple hit points on large ships so you can disable a ships weapons making it less of a threat. However these ships are not nearly as threatening as the original two games which shot lasers out of every orifice and even through it self in order to shoot you. Unless you are in line of site with an enemy gun you are likely safe.

Due to a bug with NTSC version of the game, the anims were not centred going into overscan area cutting the bottom of the anims off. This was probably an over site when converting from the pal original. So I have ripped the anims off the disc and inserted manually so they are centred and not chopped. Hopefully i have not made any mistakes in this process, but it is possible. Also, I should note that I also ripped the PAL version anims and they are slightly better in image quality. I have replaced the Intro with the pal version as it is much sharper than the ntsc version. Other anims are not as noticeable so I have left them as is.
