Player's Review

G-Police, Developed and Published by Psygnosis in 1997.

G-police is a game that comes up a lot on list of recommended/must own games to play on the ps1. personally I never liked the game due to the level of difficulty and the controls and I had it on the ps1 and pc back then (included with voodoo gfx card!). Today longplaying it, I still don't like the game and you will see me doing odd things in the longplay as I hit the wrong controls.

Before starting, the game offers options to set the level of detail. I choose to show draw distance over fps. I find the game more troubling with a higher framerate as it easy to overshoot targets and a higher draw distance means I can see enemies and building earlier and avoid them. Also maybe due to emulation issues, you will hear audio clicks at the end of all speech samples in game and mission briefings.

In the longplay, I play through all 35 missions which takes some time as some missions make you wait around for things to happen and it's not always obvious what it wants you to do to trigger events. After every 5 missions there is a cutscene progressing the story. The fmv sequences are quite long and the game is spread across 2 discs. After the credit role at the end of the game I use a code to unlock the 6 secret missions and show them one by one. I have no idea how you unlock them all legitimately. Secret3 is unlocked by completing the game. Completing that level unlocks another secret level, I do not know which. I have read another can be unlocked by killing more civilians than enemies but I do not know which secret is unlocked. Every mission has secondary objectives but the game is not influenced in any way if you miss them and there is no score to tally. Maybe a secret mission is tied to them, but I have to read anything to suggest such. I don't lose sleep offer failing a few of these in the longplay.

I mostly just use the laser cannon and the hyperbeam when available as these kill quickly. Bombs I found the least useful as they are difficult to line up onto a target and don't do much damage anyway. The plasma cannon is supposed to be most powerful weapon in the game, but the long charge time makes it less useful than the normal laser. Altitude lock is enabled by holding both pitch buttons but doing that while operating d-pad for weapons, analogue for steering, square/triangle for speed and x to fire is not easy to do so I make do without using it for most of the game.
