Player's Review

No fear Downhill Mountain Bike Racing was released on Playstation by codemasters in 1999 sometime between Colin McRae and Toca 2 game release. This is the last of the Codemasters PS1 Racing game releases recorded by me and I believe we have all of Codemasters racing/driving releases recorded now.

Not much to say on this game. It seems to use a similar engine to the Colin McRae game and uses 512x Hires mode so you may want to aspect correct the video to 16:9 to view in the games 4:3 TV Aspect. It is not a bad looking game and runs quite well. The game does feature a soundtrack but you have to turn it on in the options. I did not realise this at first so the music is not enabled until the start of the Pro Championship.

The game is quite difficult being a 1v1 race. The ai rider will put up a fight in nearly every race but they are not perfect and will crash at least once somewhere on each track. You are not likely to win if you fall off your bike more than once though. You must win every race to continue onto the next leg. There is no point system in play for this game. Each track has three races. I show the headcam every second race. The opponent differs each race but the track stays the same. Only the track length changes between the 3 leagues. Every few races you unlock a bike part to upgrade your bike which can use to tailor to specific track conditions. I found it easier just to stay with a balanced setup through most of the game.

For this longplay I play through all three championship leagues. Afterwards I show the unlocked NoFear track and some hidden tracks in single race mode. Strangely this game does not give out the secret codes during play like Toca and McRae and I needed a cheat site to find them. Finally, the game offers a stunt track mode but I can not figure out how you earn points on it. You only have one trick button for jumps and no amount of button combinations and jump combinations of ramps would give me any points so I left this part out of the longplay. For the secret races, using the codes replaces specific tracks in single player mode.
