Player's Review

Hybrid released for the Playstation in 1997 in japan and later in 2001 in PAL territories. The PAL version is being played here and has a slightly higher resolution at the expense of framerate.

Quick intro taken from a gamefaq review by D23NZ:-
"Hybrid is a first person shooting game set on a post-apocalyptic Earth. There are four playable characters to choose from. The levels are the same for each character except for the weapons (and possibly items and enemies). Each character has a different set of weapons they can acquire during the game.

The playable characters are:

George MacKenzie - A cyborg. His cybernetic eye is linked to the gun he starts the game with. This creates a glowing green targeting site around enemies, making them easy to spot in the dark. It also displays cross-hairs on the enemies when the gun is pointing at them.

Akiko Tyler - A young woman with pyrokinesis. Instead of using guns, you can change to her pryokinesis ability which allows her to shoot powerful fireballs out of her hand. This ability doesn't require ammo but costs a small amount of health. Out of all the characters, Akiko is the most agile and has the largest health bar. She starts off with a very weak gun.

The Alien - A reptilian humanoid. The Alien is good for hand-to-hand combat and is resistant to damage. The gun he starts the game with, reloads slowly but can deal a relatively high amount of damage per shot.

Brad Chesterfield - A human mercenary. This character has no special abilities but has the potential to gain access to powerful weapons early in the game"

I played as the Reptilian. He moves slower than the other characters but his damage resistance comes in handy and his initial weapon packs a punch as well. He has a melee attack, but it is mostly useless. 2 or three swypes on the floating orbs.. pointless! I thought I had selected Hard difficulty and this would be my best chance at tackling it. It certainly felt like Hard mode, but at the very end I found out it was still on easy..... ****. I really didn't like the gameplay very much. The levels can be quite large with switches placed at the opposite end of the level to where the unlocked door is. Sometimes multiple switches need to be found to unlock a single door. In later levels switches unlock hidden secret doors which are a real annoyance to find. Of course you need to look for the secret doors to find more switches or key cards to progress in the game. Some secrets are so hard to find I had to leave them behind. often I would have the key but not find the door or vice versa. The levels are long but some can be completed far quicker than what i show in the video. Especially if you know where everything is and can optimise your route but also if you forget about secrets that just reveal lots of enemies for no reward.

In part two of the video I show briefly the other 3 characters playing the bonus Demo Level and show there endings. I do not know if these endings are affected by difficulty level or not. In my initial reptilian run, I show collected some objects in the final level that do not seem to register. I do not know if that is a bug or not although collecting the nuclear bomb again was strange and not needed for the level.

Part 2
00:00:00 Akiko Tyler run through demo level. She has quick movements and her pyro hand isn't to bad. certainly more useful than the reptilian and cyborg melee attack.

00:13:05 Brad Chesterfield. He is quick but can not absorb any damage. I would find the game quite a challenge with this character even on easy.

00:21:05 Cyborg. A good all round character. faster than the reptilian and can still absorb some damage. a useless melee attack but still overall balanced with good weapons. His targeting eye is quite useful in dark areas.
