Player's Review

Clock Tower: The First Fear is a point and click survival horror game and the first instalment in the Clock Tower series. It was developed and published by Human Entertainment for the Super Famicom in Japan in 1995 and ported to the Playstation and Wonderswan in 1997. The version played here was Fan translated by Aeon Genesis in 2014. The version being played here is the Playstation port with the english fan translation.

The game is a is fairly short when you know what you are doing although its replay value comes from working towards 9 different endings although nothing is unlocked for finding them all. What makes this point and click game stand out from others is the fact that on each game run, the rooms are moved around at random and a couple of objects might change location. The game will also choose one of two objectives for the ceremony room. A couple of jump scares can also appear in the game and you will then need to find a hiding spot or a weapon. This aspect of the game isn't really shown off here in a single play through, but you can see more in the Snes Longplay.

This Longplay shows the Rank S ending. This requires saving Laura or Ann, finding your father and having Dan and Mary killed. Going for Rank S with the Snes version, you can choose to save either Ann or Laura but in the Playstation version you can only save Laura.

ANN MUST DIE FIRST! If you witness Laura's death at the start then Ann will be chucked out of a window when you pass through the hall corridor and you can only get upto a B Rank. In the snes version, you are fine if you do not look out of the window to witness Ann's death. I do not know if it is an emu issue or game bug, but if you hear the screams when going through the hall corridor on Playstation, you have auto failed the Rank S and will likely get a B. it does not matter if you look out of window or not. Another thing to remember is 'Do Not' touch the Armour when you go see Mary as you could inadvertently kill Laura and fail Rank S and likely finish with B Rank.

I do have another video on Archive.org showing what happens if you see Laura die first and try to continue on without witnessing Ann's death. Just to show it doesn't work the same way as Snes version when going for Rank S.
