Like most of the SEGA Ages games released on ps2, the game is a marmite love it or hate it conversion. The Saturn release preserved the arcade original perfectly but the Playstation 2 went ahead and 3d-fied the game. Personally I don't mind it although replacing the iconic Testarossa takes something away from it and id rather play any other version given the choice.
That said, the game is Outrun and plays as you would expect although having the car right in the middle of the screen doesnt help with anticipating the traffic ahead of you. The Arcade mode mode is shown first taking you though five different routes to each ending. The main addition to this release is an Arranged mode which has you racing across seven sections against rival cars. It's an interesting mode and shows a little of the evolution taking place before Outrun2.
Arranged mode only has one ending and beating it requires beating the rival cars in each section. It is important to get ahead of them as they can dictate which route you have to take and if you get it wrong, you wont see the rivals again. It's better to be upfront making the choices but don't slow down as they are all waiting behind you for their moment. Reaching the end ahead of seven rivals will roll the credits. Across the six races I select all six of the in game tunes which include three arranged tunes.
