It's Virtual racing, but on the Playstation 2! The gets a higher polygon count than its predecessors giving it a higher resolution 3D look with plenty of flat polys making up the terrain just so we know we are playing the same game. Like the Saturn game, the controls are very slippy giving very little grip compared to the Arcade and Mega-drive / 32x Versions.
Like the Sega Saturn release before it, the main attraction of the PS2 game is the Grand Prix Mode which takes you through five sets of six tracks. You gain progression points depending on your finishing position after each race and you need to place first overall by the end of the set to proceed to the next. Along the way, additional cars can be unlocked based on overall points that can be used in GP and free mode.
You will want to remove your headphones for this one as it's pretty push tire screeching throughout. The longplay opens with a run through Arcade mode before taking on the GP. The Arcade mode is extremely challenging as your car has no grip and slides out to the sides. This is followed by GP mode is much easier with to time limit to worry about. You don't have to win every race, just come out with the overall highest set score. I make use of any cars unlocked but the scores needed seem to be arranged that doesnt feel rewarding if doing well. It would have been better to have them unlocked at the end of each set. The coupe is a bit odd in the hands of the enemy cars and seems to work much better than yours causing you to lose the set as there is no way to keep up. I was hoping to do well enough to get the last car, but it wasn't to be and the game resets your score when replaying a set. I thought about omitting this set from the video but then I though it might be good to show how weird the races were with that car. After wining the fifth set, the credits are rolled. I then show of the final car in a quick race at the end of the video.
