Player's Review
"SEQUEL TO THE MOST LEGENDARY ACTION-SHOOTER OF ALL TIME!
Hell's fury has been unleashed. Billions are dead. To save humanity from certain extinction, you'll have to battle the most powerful demon scum to ever walk the Earth...alone. Blast your way through id Software's original mind-blowing, adrenaline-pumping, record-breaking sequel. It's your bloodiest demon slaughter yet. Now in an explosive handheld version! Battle gruesome demons across all of the original DOOM II® levels!"
The Gameboy advance port of Doom was largely taken from the Atari Jaguar with cut down textures and geometry making it more suited to home consoles. The GBA conversion of Doom II however is taken directly from the pc original with all the game assets moved to the Southpaw Engine (custom engine also used in other gba first person games) and much more comparable to the original than the previous game was. Even the hud manages to show everything and nothing lost to the small screen. The music seems to be played better and the resolution may even be higher although the resolution is dynamic changing to on screen action although initially lower when playing on Nightmare difficulty which fortunately I'm not. The controls feel odd after playing the first game and not nearly as smooth making it more difficult to aim.
As with the previous longplay, the aim is to get 100% secrets shown on all levels (not kills or items) but some levels just wont allow it like the two that are split into two levels and levels with no secrets still show as none found. A couple of levels have been altered and no way to reach the original secret areas.
Overall, It's Doom Ii as known from the PC. Some levels have been cut down which messes with the stats at the end of the levels but it's mostly all there including the music and textures. I have lowered the gamma slider which by default is set to help it visually on the non backlit gba and can be reduced for the backlit version. It's still overly bright but better than no adjustment at all.
