Player's Review

In Ketchup Kingdom, where only kids live, there was a tomato-hating boy who lived in a tomato-themed exile colony for tomato-hating kids just like him. One day, he and his girlfriend decided to leave and have a little adventure...

Tomato Adventure is a 2002 RPG video game for the Game Boy Advance. It was developed by AlphaDream and published by Nintendo for Japanese market only, because the game's target audience was deemed too young for the North American market. Originally titled Gimmick Land, the game utilizes gimmicky, toy-like controls, which add a real-time element to the usual turn-based RPG combat. This is the second game developed by AlphaDream and their first game that was developed in collaboration with Nintendo. Initially Tomato Adventure was developed for the Game Boy Color, and a mostly complete prototype of this version is known to exist, but Nintendo, which liked AlphaDream's first game, Koto Battle: Guardians of the Wind ( Kotoburu: Tengai no Moribito, released for the GBC ), contacted the developer and remade their game for the Game Boy Advance. Despite lukewarm reception, the quality of Tomato Adventure led to AlphaDream being asked by Nintendo to develop a mechanically very similar game for their mascot, which resulted in the creation of Mario & Luigi RPG (known in US as Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga), which was very well received worldwide.

In this longplay, I complete the game while collecting all Binkies, beating the Grandmaster Challenge, getting the best results in all minigames and gaining the highest rank in Gimica. However, no matter what I tried, I could not gain all Gimica cards, despite various attempts to win against myself in multiplayer Link Battle or to find more NPC opponents, or to find the solution on Japanese websites. It seems like there is either some sort of gimmick that I'm not aware of, or there is a bug. There is about an hour of grinding after the moment I step into the last level, since it was the only way to unlock all attacks in the game. Many additional scenes were edited in at the end.
