Lemmings

Player's Review
Lemmings is a puzzle video game originally developed by DMA Design and first published by Psygnosis for the Amiga, Atari ST and PC in 1991. The game was programmed by Mike Dailly and David Jones, and was inspired by a simple animation that Dailly created while experimenting with Deluxe Paint.
The objective of the game is to guide a group of anthropomorphic creatures called Lemmings through a number of obstacles to a designated exit. To save the required number of lemmings to win, one must determine how to assign a limited number of eight different skills to specific lemmings that allow the selected lemming to alter the landscape, to affect the behaviour of other lemmings, or to clear obstacles to create a safe passage for the rest of the lemmings.
Lemmings was one of the best-received video games of the early 1990s. It was the second highest rated game in the history of Amstrad Action. Lemmings is also one of the most widely ported video games, and is estimated to have sold over 15 million copies between its various ports.
The Game Gear version is based on the Master System port. It has lower resolution and is badly cut at the top and bottom of the screen, making it hard to safely tunnel in these areas, resulting in some levels requiring different solutions because of this; just like the SMS port, it has unique Sega levels; also just like the SMS port, the maximum amount of Lemmings is 20; you can?t Dig underneath Blockers; you can Build through existing ladders facing opposite direction; Lemmings will cancel Digging through diagonal piece of terrain as soon as they remove the top pixel that they stand on, which makes Digging harder; some levels have changed layout, other levels are shuffled; net and spider web terrain are hellish in these ports, instead of being just an inconvenience, because of the aforementioned issue with digging and because Lemmings tend to get stuck in these types of terrain if they walk upward into a narrow space. Most mechanics are either faithful to the original or changed slightly; Mayhem 16 and Mayhem 27 (the Just a Minute levels) are identical and both can easily be solved because Bashing is faster in this version. The only thing I dislike about this port is the fact that task menu pops up whenever you move cursor close to the bottom of the screen, which also makes the cursor skip towards the bottom on its own a little. This translates into wasted time and Lemmings whenever you need to assign a task to a Lemming who is close to the bottom, because menu will pop up and overlay the Lemming.
I tried to save Lemmings whenever possible, but there probably are a few levels that could?ve been solved better. Mayhem 2 (The Boiler Room) has a 100% solution, but it requires extreme precision and flawless timing, so I gave up after several test attempts. After beating the game, I show death animations and different messages you get depending on how many Lemmings you saved.
