Player's Review

From Wiki:-
"Astron Belt (アストロンベルト) is a LaserDisc video game in the form of a third-person, space combat rail shooter, released in arcades in 1983 by Sega in Japan, and licensed to Bally Midway for release in North America. Developed in 1982,[6] it was the first major arcade laserdisc video game. The game combines full-motion video (FMV) footage from the laserdisc with real-time 2D graphics. "

Kind of an odd combination putting a laserdisc and MSX1 together but, there we go. The MSX1 hardware is quite basic and with its gfx overlayed ontop of fmv it looks overall quite jarring and ruins the illusion of being part of what's unfolding.

A short game overall which takes you through several waves of enemies in space before traveling to a planet and getting into the trench run which moves left and right easily catching you if you are not in the exact right spot. Eventually take on the final boss and destroy its core to win the game. After that the game loops forever more getting progressively more difficult.

At the start of the game, you press 'Start' when the level you want to start on is highlighted. You start with 60 seconds of invincibility to rack up a bit of score and get an idea of the challenge ahead. After that you get two lives to work with and more are rewarded as you progress. After dying on level 6, i start over on level 1 and try to show a bit more of the video content while the enemies are not so aggressive, but you really have seen it all before in the first run. Bit of a lazy longplay overall really.

Speaking of lazy, the game interesting makes use of content from Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Battle Beyond the Stars, and Message from Space as well as little of its own original works.
