Player's Review

Spectrum 128k

Mega-Apocalypse released for the spectrum by Martech Games in 1988.

While not a patch on the C64 original the game isn't to bad on the spectrum although there seems to have been a few rule changes to the gameplay. Also when the planets go crazy you don't see a colour change in this version so you only have its sudden speed change to go on. I'm sure they could have flashed between bright/half-bright colours even on a monochrome screen. Actually judging by the title screen they could have even had a multicolour starfield and somehow made it all work.

The C64 version crashes after level 99 although a bug fixed release resets the game to zero and carries on. The snes version has 32 levels. The spectrum version loops after every 32(or maybe 33) where the game suddenly gets easy again although the levels feel longer. I take the game past 100 levels but it seems to be just yet another loop and I end the game there.

The levels alternate between shooting up the screen and just moving you ship around to aim and levels where you have auto fire enabled and you can spin the ship around although this makes it harder to aim for me. The game runs at a smooth 50fps the whole time with some flickering here and there but feels quite smooth and features a shorter version of the same soundtrack as used on the c64 original and plays throughout. If only more spectrum games did this. Overall its a good port but could have benefited from a splash of colour flashing.
