Player's Review

Spectrum 128k

Tetris, developed by Andromeda Software and Published by Mirrorsoft in 1988.

“From the blasted plains beyond the Urals comes the most remarkable computer game yet. The same minds that produce chess champions have developed a cunning game that deceives through its simplicity. Teris is a new world from Russia. Tetris a totally original concept in gaming. Tetris addiction is just a game away. Play Tetris.”

Mirrorsoft released tetris to pretty much all the 8 bit home computers of the time and mostly follow the same development rules so they all look/play similar. Well, apart from the C64 version which seemed to go its own way especially with the music. The Spectrum version has music as well by David Whitaker but the music pieces are really short and loop constantly and will drive you mad if you listen all the way through this video. It's interesting to note that the scroller on the title screen advises you to go check out the c64 version due to its great music track.

The longplay shows a playthrough from level 0 right through to level 9 where the speed gets a bit stupid and i eventually fail. I wanted to show how many lines the game allows but it turns out it never ends and the numbers rollback after 200. By default the backgrounds are enabled but makes the game more difficult as you cant always see the gaps between the bricks. The colour is randomly chosen at the start and fixed throughout the game. The next piece windows can be enabled/disabled at anytime. Im not sure if it effects scoring at all.

After the main playthrough I show a very quick run with sfx enabled and backgrounds disabled just for comparison sakes.
