Player's Review

"The sequel to the original rumbler is back and re-mastered in 3D. Slam the asphalt with bigger, better and totally devastating attacks. Ex-wrestler, Max Thunder, joins up with Axel and Blaze to throw earth-shattering body slams and fist attacks. New thrasher, Skate, assaults enemies with high-speed inline attacks, and spinning jump kicks. Use secret weapons to bash your way through gangs of bikers to rescue your friend and defeat Mr. X."

The standalone Nintendo eShop release of the game is being played here. The game is also part of Sega 3D Reprint Archives 3: Final Stage (セガ3D復刻アーカイブス3 FINAL STAGE) for the Japanese region.

This is a 'No Skillz' run of the game. I am utilising features specific to the 3DS game that allows casual play to one hit combo the bad guys. I generally avoid these type of games as I don't do so well with them but I am able to show the game on 3ds. We have longplays for the Mega Drive game if you want to see the game as originally intended. It should be noted that the music has been authentically reproduced here with perhaps one of the best Mega Drive audio emulations.

The 3DS version of the game features some extra modes to make the game more accessible and also a different way to experience the game. By default, the game works just like the Genesis game but for the video I make use of Rage Relay mode to enable all four characters to appear during play one after the other so I can show them off without needing to use a continue. When one loses energy the game switches to the next character in the order you select at the start. I am also playing in casual mode which allows one hit combos which makes clearing the game a walk in the park. For challenge, I enable mania mode which throws a room full of enemies at you.

The game is a side scrolling beat em up which has you fighting numerous gang members that stand between you and Mr X. Numerous special moves are at your disposal with the more powerful ones bleeding away your energy bar. I try to show all moves but I have no doubt missed some, as I mention earlier ... No Skillz! Running the game side by side with the original Streets of Rage, you might think there were running on two different consoles showing some real progression in game development on the Mega Drive.

After completing the game, I show the game running as Bare Knuckle II as it is known in the Japanese region. The only notable difference is the title screen and intro dialogue. Here I play in the unlocked Fists of Death mode for one hit kills but in the original one character mode as Max. I also enable the Classic Mode Screen Filter as well as Mega Drive 2 audio.
