Player's Review

"The Legendary Ninja Warrior Returns. Betrayed by your friend, you must battle an ancient and evil clan in this epic continuation of the acclaimed Shinobi series. Intense ninja combat and magic. Over the top boss encounters."

Shinobi was last seen in 2003s Nightshade. Shinobi returns in the twelfth game in the series and goes back to its side scrolling roots. The style of gameplay is much like 1993s Shinobi III: return of the Ninja Master. Developed by Griptonite Games, Shinobi follows Jiro Musashi, the father of the original Shinobi, Joe Musashi.
The game combines side scrolling levels with 3D action sequences, pitting shinobi against a variety of threats, from henchmen to helicopters. The game also has a combo system merging melee, ranged and acrobatic attacks as well as magic.

The game opens in 1256AD at the Oboro Clan Village, the location of the first Zeed attack and you goal is to repel that attack. After this. it all gets a bit disjointed as the cutscenes between levels have no narrative, but after some explosions and time travel antics, we end up in 2056AD where we begin the fight to take down the Shadow Master!

The controls are responsive enough although you have to have very precise timing to parry attacks. You only have to time the first parry and the rest will happen automatically unless told to do another move. The game uses the lower screen to select magic ability as well as tracking the bonus coins. a single stage also makes use of the gyro control. While the game has plenty of moves, I tend to stick to the one or two that I know works that I can pull off reliably. It might make it a little boring to watch but it was important to make sure I get hit as little as possible to maintain the multiplier needed for a high S rank score. I wouldn't normally worry about it, but there are unlocks I may want to show that requires it.

In the first level I just melee in an effort to grab a couple of unlockables. In level two I just throw Kunai and parry. I must have made a mistake and done a melee somewhere though. This causes a lowish score and I only just got the s-rank. There are two routs through the stage and I took the one with less enemies which was a bad idea in hindsight. Using magic gives a score penalty so I have used sparingly.

Overall, i think the game can be a bit too challenging for its own good especially if you want all the achievements and unlocks that goes with them which takes a lot of the fun out it. Some stages are clearly designed to show of the 3D feature which can cause some issues with aiming with odd camera angles but i think its a good game for the first round of releases on 3ds.

Unlocks include, music, costumes, shinobi trivia and cheats all for use in free play mode so you can have some fun after completing the game. You can even play as Sarah Krieger and weald guns instead of knives. There are also some additional challenge modes although completing these doesn't unlock anything. There are also Streetpass levels where you have no life bar and and die after one hit, like the original arcade game! These are not currently accessible in emulation atm.

Note: Recorded with Citra 3DS emulation. There is a noticeable issue with the audio resulting in some odd echoing, ringing with the games music as if its running at a different rate to the sfx. This is an issue with HLE. Using LLE, the audio is more correct yet different. However LLE is too slow with DS Surround audio so the title/dojo is recorded with LLE and the rest of the game with HLE.
