Player's Review

"The popular shooter Fantasy Zone is back, and it is bigger than ever! Players can continue the story with Fantasy Zone II: The Tears of Opa-Opa, a remake of the original Master System game, or experience an all-new endless mode, Fantasy Zone II: Link Loop Land!

Long ago, far away in space... It is Space Year 1432, ten years since peace was restored to Fantasy Zone, thanks to the hero Opa-Opa. However, many questions were left unanswered, such as the whereabouts of Opa-Opa's father and the existence of a "mastermind", rumored to be guiding the invading forces.

Once again, panic has come to the people of Fantasy Zone. A new enemy, known as the "Nenon", have attacked and begun constructing a large fortress. Opa-Opa must travel to Fantasy Zone once more, unable to forget what happened ten years ago..."

3D Fantasy Zone II W is based on the PS2 remake of Fantasy Zone II for the Master System developed by M2 in 2008. The game was developed on an expanded System16 board with more memory and designed to look and play like an Arcade game. The PS2 can be found on 'Sega Ages Vol. 33 Fantasy Zone Complete Collection.

The 3DS game has some additions to make life a little easier which I make use of in the longplay. During play you accumulate coins and when reach specific milestone features get unlocked. Base Markers you get right from the start which adds an arrow showing where the neatest base is. Later, Secret Shop marker adds the ability to highlight where the secret entrances are. Later still, Extended weapon 1 time will be available followed by extra money drops. The final unlock requires 2.4 million and allows for infinite weapon 1 time which can make short work of the bosses with the laser. I spend a long time in Link Loop mode to get the final unlock as the money bonus does not work here. Another big feature is rapid firing can make for a quick game.

For the longplay I start out in Opa-Opa mode. This mode requires playing three times in order to unlock extra characters for Link Loop mode. Once completed I play Link Loop Land for a bit which is an endless score attack mode. You start off with character specific loadout with no shop available. Weapon power is determined by the Link bar which you need to keep powered up by chaining kills and collecting coins. I show gameplay with each of the three characters and although I reach a multi of 160 and the game is pretty much unplayable without save states at this point the game might actually get harder still. The tiny projectiles are really difficult to see as the fly across the screen.

Overall, this is a very good conversion of the game and while you cant see it in this video, the 3D works exceptionally well and one of the best in the 2d-3d 3ds conversions. Multiple background layers really help to make the game pop with a real sense of depth.
