Player's Review

"Dance with bullets and shoot down the enemy in Steel Empire now on Nintendo 3DS family systems! Steel Empire is a steampunk shooter featuring frantic combat, filled with powerful enemies and insane obstacles. Enjoy a beautiful world and retro gameplay as you dodge and shoot your way through classic stages.

Choose one of four difficulty settings based on your set of skills and fight the evil empire! See how well you did using the Replay Mode and show your worth by getting all of the achievements. Original released on SEGA Mega Drive and Game Boy Advance, Steel Empire is finally available on Nintendo 3DS family systems!"

A Shoot 'Em Up that's a little bit different with it's Steampunk aesthetic and its powerup system not to mention that it is now in 3D on the 3DS. There are two ships to choose from with slightly different stats and unlike with other shooters, you can change which you prefer to use before each level starts. During play, you have an energy bar which allows you to absorb some hits before losing a life. Nothing to special there but what stands out is you don't lose your powerup level and if you are forced to use a continue, you will restart the level with your power level intact. You can level up to level 20 maximum by collecting P spheres (Three per level up). Energy refills are represented by Hearts and the blue orb is the ship support and finally B is extra bombs. You can choose to fire left or right at any time, but never at the same time. At the end of each stage is a boss fight that can be tackled in different ways with multiple hit points available. The final boss is a real pain and the fight goes on a while. Complete seven stages to reach the end.

For the longplay I first go through hard mode and then through the unlocked Difficult mode. This gives the opportunity to show the game played with both ships. Thanks to achievements I show difficult mode with no bombs or lives lost which required some save state abuse as it can get very hectic with all the projectiles and enemies on screen at once and the bosses are pure bullet sponges.

Although you cant see it in this video, the game takes place in the top layer but the background has multiple layers giving good sense of depth, probably more than Andro Dunos II. The 3DS remake does look good overall and the gameplay can be really challenging as the screen gets busy with enemies and projectiles coming from both sides at once!
