Control the only free Fuzzy, Clyde Radcliff, on a mission that takes him through the haunted Black Forest of Gateau, to a land full of crazy creatures, scuba diving in piranha ponds and into the lethal torture chambers themselves. You need quick reactions, a sharp brain and a crazy sense of humour to complete the cartoon game of the year - Creatures!"

Creatures is a platform game originating on the Commodore64. On that platform is was a standout title pushing the machines limits to produce and spectacular looking game by C64 standards with console game like platforming. Thalamus was renowned for publishing some of the best C64 games right at the very end of it's commercial life. The Amiga version however .... It is replicating a 1990 game in in a time where expectations have evolved somewhat by 1993. Whilst a great C64 game, it's not really challenging the Amiga. The game is now more cartoony with large colourful sprites baring little resemblance to the original character. The game plays mostly the same with the levels mostly the same but some changes exist including changes to the end of stage baddies. The music is recognisable and reasonably well done but the sound effects are not so great and the weapon fire in particular uses an out place, loud and annoying sample. The collision detection can be really bad in places and you can take a hit when there is clearly space between you on the object. The music seems to be lacking on the torture screens here as well. You can already tell I'm not much of a fan of this version.

Gameplay involves playing through three areas split into two levels scrolling to the right and a torture chamber. Quite short, but also very challenging just like the original although even more so here thx to dodgy collision detection. The challenge mainly stems from the game being cheap with some enemies being indestructible whilst requiring some tricky jumping between other indestructible enemies all the whilst other random fire coming out of the ground! Along the way you can collect magic creatures (or potions) to spend at the shop that appears at the end of each stage to buy new or upgrade weapons. Its a good idea to get at least the first level of every weapon as there are some areas where particular weapons can work far better than others to help you get past a particular enemy. After completing the three areas you complete the game!

The longplay shows playing through all areas and collecting all the potions including some hidden ones. At the end of the video I show the deaths of the three wuzzies if you take to long to solve the chamber. Overall, whilst I'm not a fan of this version of the game, it is a good conversion perhaps missing some things in the overall presentation but the shot sounds is really off-putting and the collision detection is sure to cause some frustration.
