"Five...four...three ...two...one...GO!
Your 300bhp Ford Group A Sierra Cosworth roars away from the starting line, skidding round the hairpin bends, as you speed through unfamiliar, ever-changing terrain....in a race where every fraction of a second counts. Lombard RAC Rally recreates all the excitement of the world famous Rally-with the help of RAC drivers who guarantee its authenticity. Complete the five stages-down winding tracks, through verdant forests and over precarious mountain ranges-with the additional hazards of night driving and fog. Repair damage and add new features to your car in the workshop, and earn money for spares by taking part in a TV interview. This is the official simulation of a lifetime ....will your skills measure up to the challenge?"
Lombard RAC rally is as it's name suggests, a rally game set in Great Britain. Much like the Test Drive game (but not quite as good) you play from a driver in car perspective which includes the navigators map and many dials which actually show useful info like engine and tyre ware. The looks to be an update to one of Red rats 8-bit Atari games, Speed run.
At the start of the game you can only access the five individual stages stages. You need to play all five as well as place at least 3rd place on one of them before you can enter the full rally. Yor car will take damage and you need a way to pay for repairs so before playing each leg, you can try to win some money at the tv interview by answering some rally questions. Winning legs also earns money and you can use this to upgrade the car as well as repair before going into the full rally.
The driving is mostly ok but the way the collision detection works can be frustrating. If you go to fast around corners sometimes the car will start to spin and you need to correct before going off the side of the road. The driving is mostly ok and perms well enough even on a stock A500. There is not much to the game as it's all about getting your name on the leader board.
Overall, not a bad rally game if a little short but the test drive series I think are better for tearing around the roads with the in car dash.
