"It's slime time with Steg the slug! T'yungunz need some nosh and Steg needs to feed 'em. So strap on the bionic legs, engage that rocket pack and pop that power pill! It's busy work 'coz Steg's family need raisin'!"

Codemasters published Steg the slug for most of the 8/16-Bit home computers of the time. Whilst each version follows mostly the same level design, each one has it's own look and feel and some minor and some major differences effecting the difficulty of the levels.

The game is short with only 10 levels but there is plenty of frustration to be had to keep you player or launching the game into space to never see the light of day again!

In each level you are required to feed the T'yungunz by trapping the grubs in bubbles and manoeuvring them around the level to fall into the nest. There is a time limit and if you take to long the T'yungunz start to die requiring even more grubs to bring them back from the brink If you make good time, the T'yungunz fall asleep and you win the level. There are few devices to help you such as extra speed, bubble blowing sped and especially the jet pack. Just watch where you land else you will roast the grubz! I didn't find the legs to be of any use in this version of the game. They can protect you from spikes on the ground but when using them you cant go anywhere, stuck on the platform you are on until they ware off.

The early levels are fairly easy but really steps up after level six. Level nine I find especially frustrating and I cant see a way to save all the T'yungunz, not that you need to which is the secret to the level I guess. Speaking of secrets, some levels (maybe all I dunno as I cant find the trigger in every level.) have a hidden area where you can go swimming for starts to boost your score. Pointless really and you are in danger of wasting energy that does not re-fil when moving to the next stage. You need to eat food to keep your energy up but watch out for bad apples. Did I mention you have only one life! level codes help and there is no highscore table to worry about anyway.

Overall, the Amiga version is likely the best version with everything moving at a nice pace although controlling steg can be a pain in all versions as sometimes he will just not move where you need him to be or the controls are to sensitive and he moves too much. It doesnt help that the bubbles have to be in perfect alignment else the fans wont move them to where they need to be, pixel perfect precision is needed. I found the game notably easier than the C64 game with levels more closely matching the Spectrum game.
