Player's Review
"It's fast... it's furious... it's POWER DRIFT! Choose from twelve wacky drivers, like Jason the Skinhead or Jeronimo the Mohican and rev your way through 27 stomach churning circuits! Watch the dust fly and the wheels spin as you screech over a 'roller coaster' track and wave goodbye to your opponents! Roar over mounds of mud, drive through the desert, slip 'n' slide on snow-covered tarmac and race your way through the night to face the final lap! CAREFUL! Power Drift is no easy ride! If you're heading for a collision hold onto your seat and enjoy those 360 degree spins before you bump back down to earth! Burn some rubber, put your foot to the floor and scream back to the winning post!! "
Power Drift is one of the great Sega super scaler arcade games and like all the others were ported to pretty much all the home systems of the era. That's not to say they were all great conversions and this one for the Amiga 500 certainly is not and should have been canned. It's looks nice enough and the menu works well enough but when it comes time to race, it may as well be game over. During the race the game is running at between 1 and 2 fps, 3 when there just you and a straight road ahead. As soon as a corner approaches the game almost stops to think about what's next. The music is the usual poor effort from David Lowe but at least we get Music plus sfx! a rare thing once we cross into the 90s.
In the longplay I show all five courses choosing different drivers for each which may effect difficulty, I'm not really sure. Each course have five tracks as well as a bonus sixth if you come in first place in the previous five. The tracks are small and thegame tries to give the impression that you are moving fast. with the low frame rate it can be hard to turn in time and all to easy to crash into walls and drivers reducing your speed. You get a high and low gear to manage which helps on some tight bends.
Overall, a poor conversion. Its not so unfair that you cant win, even with crashes the game gives you a chance but you need some determination to persevere against the low framerate. I gave it a good chance by giving the A500 some real fastmem and running in ntsc but it doesnt help much.
The main recording is running in PAL but a second is added as a bonus in NTSC. The Game has an issue in Course C running in ntsc causing one of the tracks to not render properly making it not completable.
