Player's Review

JURASSIC PARK - Treachery has turned John Hammond's dream into a living nightmare. His plan, to introduce the children of today to the kings of the prehistoric age, has now metamorphosed into a monster which threatens the world. With the electronic defences out of action and the computerised control systems sabotaged, his deadly creations are now roaming free throughout Jurassic Park. Dare you face up to the terrifying Tyrannosaurus Rex, the deadly Dilophosaurs and the vicious Velociraptors? Only you, Dr. Grant, have a chance of restoring this island paradise to peace. Are you ready... to play in the park?"

Jurassic Park for the Amiga was delivered in two versions, one for the A500 class machines and this one for the Amiga 1200/4000 benefitting from extra colours and higher resolution 3d fps levels. A version was also released for PC Dos machines. The Home Computer versions of the game differ greatly from the game console releases.

The game opens on a large map with the initial objective of getting out of the pit and rescuing the kids, get them to safety and make your way to the visitors centre. There will be hurdles in the way not limited to dinosaurs that want to eat you but also locked doors which may need to be opened remotely or by finding key cards and that's about the limit of the gameplay. In some levels there will be motion detector terminals you can use to see your current objective, see a map of the area and also remotely open any gates near by.

There's not much else to the game but the levels are long and it can be easy to get lost in them. You start out with the standard taser type weapon that can kill dinos instantly making it a great weapon, maybe the best but scattered about is also shot gun ammo and while you can fire at range, it takes too many shots to down a dino making the gun not so useful. Eventually you will get to the 3D fps stages and these can be even more annoying that the top down levels. The objective is simple enough, just navigate the maze to the end of the level but it aint Doom! There will be dinos to shoot but it can be more advantageous to ignore them and just run around the level saving much health and ammo for if you get cornered. Ammo and health pickups are well hidden but there are there to find if you explore.

Overall the game is well presented and looks the part. However the levels can be long without any additions to the gameplay and the maps can take some memorisation to navigate. The dreary sound seems atmospheric at first but soon gets tiring with something similar from the movies soundtrack would have been preferred. The games performance can really chug when there is more than one dinosaur on the screen. The 3D fps levels are easy to get lost in and go on for too long although impressive to see at the time of release. Levels are large and so are the loading times which I have trimmed down so as not to wait on a blank screen for too long.
