Player's Review

"Mighty Donkey Kong has captured the beautiful girl - watch him make off with her to the top of the half constructed building. Now play the role of the brave carpenter Mario, as he fearlessly pursues the frightening beast and attempts to rescue the damsel."

Sometimes referred to as Donkey Kong II, this is the second release of the game for the UK/EU market on tape and disk. Again the conversion is well done and fairly represents the arcade original and The aspect ratio is better this time. One major issue is the Sound. It seems overly gained and very noisy.

This conversion is again a fair representation of the original and plays just as well. The ladders are now easier to get on and off and also retract on the conveyor belt stage but the overall difficulty seems notably higher. All 4 stages are here and the game gets more difficult as you loop the game through the levels. I could not complete level 5 in this version though. On the elevator level there are 4 springs on screen at once and I just could not get the timing right to make it up the ladder before being hit by one. The stage is more difficult than in any of the other releases on C64.

I assume the game is endless, but I'll never know. I did play through all levels and looped as many times as I could which shows progressive difficulty and its worth noting that this release does not insert level 1 between the other stages as the levels progress. Overall, you are probably better off playing the Atari release or better yet the Oxyron version.
