Player's Review

"Grab the wheel and hit the nitros - the challenge of off-road racing awaits you! This conversion of the American arcade coin-op classic contains all the thrills and spills of the original. "

This is another original arcade game by Atari that got conversions to pretty much all the active home computer and consoles of the time. All unique in there own ways depending of the limitations of the system. Not that there are any bad versions as the game plays well on all the systems it was made for, even the Atari Lynx!

Object of the game is to simply race around each track as it comes, picking up and cash or nitros that appear as well as ideally winning the race. Second or third place results in a lower cash prize and coming forth is an outright loss requiring a credit to continue playing. The game is endless and keeps looping until you run out of credits. Prize money is spent on upgrades for your car to make it faster and more controllable. If you are short of money you can cash in a credit for a cash boost.

In the longplay I play through every track until no more unlock. Each time a track unlocks or its reverse variant the game starts over as you go through them all again. Overall a good conversion to the C64 but as I mentioned before, there are no bad versions. The colours are ..C64 but the gfx are nice even with its chunky resolution. The game has multiple music pieces throughout. Only a few minor issues where you car controls freeze up if you get pushed hard into a wall.
