Player's Review

"Ace! Zap, Crash, Wow! - Gavin Raeburn's meanest game yet! Poltergeist features wicked, fast action, 137 metamorphosising ghosts in 32 spooky worlds. Select your weapon and destroy Poltergeist!!!"

Is this another case of marketing imagining the game to be different to what it actually is? The front cover makes you think its gonna be some kind of star wars light sabering ghostbusters game. What we in fact have is another shoot-em-up, the sixth game from Gaxx (Gavin Raeburn).

The game is fast, too fast for its own good. The game plays a little like defender in that you move left - right and scroll through the stage blasting aliens. On the way you need to destroy all generators (square blocks) and land on the landing pad to complete the level. You can also collect the flashing dots to upgrade your weapons. I collect em all just because..

The game has 32 levels and once you have completed them, the game loops with no acknowledgement that you have beaten the game. This is an annoying game design trait that seems to be in all of Gavin's c64 games. Most of the weapons are a bit naff in that they only fire in certain directions which can cause your problems. The quad fire is four way and is probably the most ideal weapon even though it is comparably weak compared to the others that concentrate fire.
