Player's Review

"At the ancient Mexican pyramid of Tenochtitlan, the Aztec gods have demanded a human sacrifice. You are one of the chosen! Your only hope of escape is to survive a series of tests in which your agility and stamina are pushed to the limits. With a pulsating soundtrack and seven screens full of spear-throwing warriors, booby trapped chambers and pools of piranhas, Aztec Challenge is a challenge on an epic scale!"

An oldie that probably every C64 owner had played at some point.
Devilishly difficult as you need to complete each stage in a single life (no checkpoints) but the game will at least remember what level you are on if you fail all allocated attempts. Should you manage to complete all 7 stages then you can continue on to complete them all 3 more times!! only more difficult. Difficulty ramps up in speed of attacks and level length.

In the longplay I play through all 4 phases until the game just ...ends throwing you back to the title screen. No hi-score entry in this game. The game started to bug out in the final floor trap stage making nearly all tiles traps and the door unreachable. It took many attempts to get through this stage and it shouldn't have. I cut most of those attempts from the longplay to avoid repetition but left enough to show what the game was doing. The final bridge stage was also causing problems due to janky collision detection where it might say you jumped to late even though there is still bridge under the feet and also not being able to complete the jump. An underwhelming ending considering the effort though. I used the Remember release of the game which has some bug fixes as loading the original tape had many gfx issues.

Annoyingly, there is a short wait between levels. Pressing fire as stated on the screen wont start until an undisclosed time has passed. It might be this way to avoid having you skip the instructions but you shouldn't need them from the second phase onwards.
