Player's Review

"MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE brings to life the deadly, eternal battle between good and evil, the prize being the Key to time travel and with it the title 'Masters of the Universe'. You, as HE-MAN, must search for the chords which make up the Key. Only you can save Earth from domination as HE-MAN meets Skeletor in the battle for Eternia, the final chapter that will seal the fate of mankind forever."

Well this is an odd one. The gameplay is mostly a top down labyrinth requiring you to run around the map collecting 8 chords to form a melody. The last two are awarded as part of the final sequences. One the surface it looks like a pretty naff game but the game does have a couple of mini games requiring you to fist fight and have a shoot out. There is also a narrative that break up the stages and kind of follows the movie. It hurts to say it, but its not the worst licenced movie game.

The game is not too difficult. Whilst enemies are constantly spawning and firing at you, they don't do much damage and there are plenty of randomly spawning energy refill swords appearing on your journey. extra lives are awarded at a steady pace as well. There is a map screen to help with navigation but it doesn't point anything out. I use the map to help show where the chords can be found. There is a time limit so it helps to go round the map the right way as story events happen to unlock areas and you don't want to be on the wrong side of the map as it can take some time to get from one side to the other.

Overall, not a bad game once its all figured out. Better presented than most and quite a lot included for a single load game (apart from the initial intro). What does stand out though is at no point do you get to wave your sword around!
